The tense situation unfolded in the 19th over when Kohli, batting at No. 5, had just started to settle in after an ordinary show in the Chennai Test. Bangladesh pacer Khaled Ahmed delivered a ball outside off, and the dashing right-hander managed a thick under-edge, sending the ball trickling down towards the right.
With the urgency clear from the Indian camp to make the most of the limited-overs left after two rain-marred days, Kohli called for a single, but the non-striker Rishabh Pant hesitated midway and called him back.
By then, Kohli had already stepped so far out of his crease, and the Bangladesh bowler, sensing a chance, charged towards the ball. In a desperate attempt to run Kohli out, Khaled under-armed a throw toward the stumps. Accepting his fate, Kohli had almost given up on making it back, but to his luck, the throw missed its mark, offering him a lifeline.
After this, Kohli and the Indian dressing room were seen in big relief, but Bangladesh's frustration was evident as they realized they had squandered a golden opportunity. However, the former Indian captain could score only 47 runs off 35 balls in the ongoing match in Kanpur.
