Indian legendary cricketer Virat Kohli's return to ODI cricket ended in disappointment after he was dismissed for an 8-ball duck against Mitchell Starc. This marks the first time Virat has been dismissed for a duck in Australia.
India takes on Australia in the first ODI match of the Australian summer at the Optus Stadium in Perth. This initiates the World Cup preparations for the two sides, as the finalists from the 2023 World Cup clash in an epic battle.
Indian greats Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have made their much-awaited return to the 50-over format since the ICC Champions Trophy. The two greats are considered to be lining up for the 2027 ICC World Cup.
Virat Kohli departs without troubling the scorers at Perth
Virat Kohli is playing just one format in international cricket, after having announced retirement from the Test and T20I formats.
The batter has been backed by greats to continue playing the format till the next World Cup in 2027, and even he has agreed upon feeling fitter than ever coming into the game after such a long gap.
Virat's much-longed-for return turned into a nightmare for him, as he was dismissed for a duck for the first time on Aussie soil. After having played a maiden over to Mitchell Starc, Kohli was dismissed off the first ball of Starc's fourth over.
A delivery round-off that was leaving the right-hander was edged and lobbed to point. The ball travelled, and a sharp catch from young Cooper Connolly at point sent the Indian great back to the pavilion.
Unfortunate for Virat Kohli, he was finding difficult to off the mark and that cost his wicket 😭

Shubman Gill's captaincy debut ends in a disaster with the bat
Indian youngster Shubman Gill has thrived when he has been handed the added responsibility of captaincy. Even in international cricket, he has proven to be a promising player in the longest format of the game, after Test captaincy was passed onto him from Rohit Sharma.
Coming into Australia, this seems a great challenge for the 25-year-old youngster. However, he cannot be expected to compromise his batting form for anything. Shubman Gill has been promising as an ODI batter, holding onto the no. 1 spot in ICC rankings for over a year.
Shubman struggled against the Aussie pacers after he opened the innings with Rohit Sharma. He was the third Indian wicket to fall before rain interrupted play at Perth. Though a bit unfortunate, the batter nicked a ball angling down the leg side off Nathan Ellis's bowling.
Australian trio rally onto the Indian top-order with sublime accuracy
Mitchell Starc, the veteran Australian fast bowler, took up the new balls alongside Josh Hazlewood at Perth. While Starc shaped away sharply from the right-handed batters, Hazlewood kept angling towards the batter's body. However, both the bowlers looked in sublime control and kept hitting the deck very hard.
The bounce was brought into play by the two tallest bowlers currently in world cricket, and the Indian batters felt surprised by the sudden bounce. Former skipper Rohit Sharma was dismissed with an uneven bouncer that pounced onto him. Virat Kohli was, however, tricked as pressure kept mounting on him, following 7 dot balls.
