Washington Sundar had a memorable day at Pune's MCA Stadium during the second Test between India and New Zealand. The offspinner picked up his sixth wicket of the innings after dismissing Ajaz Patel with a beauty.

Sundar bowled a full ball on a flatter trajectory to Patel as the left-hander was stuck on the back foot. The ball caught the inside edge of Patel's bat and went on to hit the stumps. It was the ninth wicket of the day and six of those wickets went to Sundar.

Washington Sundar did not stop here and dismissed Mitchell Santner in his next over. The offspinner bowled a good length ball on the stumps. Santner tried to defend off the back foot but the ball fizzed past his outside edge to hit the off stump.

It was a classical offspinner's dismissal to the left-hander as Santner had no idea about the ball. He looked at the surface in dismay but New Zealand had already been bowled out for 259.

It was an unbelievable performance from Washington Sundar as he destroyed New Zealand's batting line-up with some brilliant offspin bowling. The youngster finished with 7-59 in 23.1 overs.

It was also his best figures ever in first-class cricket and it came at the right time. The allrounder was brilliant throughout the day and concentrated more on his lines and change in pace rathet than doing anything different.

Ravichandran Ashwin provides India initial breakthroughs

Earlier, Ravichandran Ashwin provided India the first breakthrough in his first over of the match. Ashwin dismissed Tom Latham, The veteran offspinner went on to pick up two more New Zealand wickets in the form of Will Young and Devon Conway.

After the first three wickets, it was all about Washington Sundar. The young offspinner dismissed the dangerous looking Rachin Ravindra with a beauty and it started a collapse for New Zealand. Ravindra was out for a well-made 65 off 105 balls.

He picked up another wicket in the form of Tom Blundell to leave the visitors five down before Tea. Washington carried on his success in the last session as well. The youngster picked up wickets in a flurry afterwards as New Zealand had no answer to him.

Mitchell Santner provided some late resistance with 33 off 51 balls but Sundar picked up his wicket to wrap up the New Zealand innings. His last three wickets were all bowled as he kept attacking the stumps.

Sundar was not in India's initial squad before the first Test. He was bought in as the 16th member of the squad for the second Test match here. With New Zealand having three left-handers in top four, he was given a chance to play ahead of Axar Patel.

Sundar is coming into this match on the back of an excellent hundred for Tamil Nady in Ranji Trophy. He also picked up 6 wickets in the match besides scoring 152.
