New Zealand cricketer Daryl Mitchell took a clean catch in the slips to get rid of Team India's opening batter Yashasvi Jaiswal on Day 2 of the second Test match. New Zealand all-rounder Glenn Phillips provided an early breakthrough for his team by dismissing Yashasvi Jaiswal in his first over of the match.

The hosts started the day at 16/1 at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune. Overnight batter Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill started with a cautious approach against the New Zealand bowling attack. However, Mitchell Santner picked up two quick wickets to put India under pressure.

New Zealand skipper Tom Latham brought Glenn Phillips to the attack with two left-handed batters at the crease. The decision yielded results for the visiting team as Phillips removed Jaiswal in his first over. The left-handed batter had to depart to the dressing room after scoring 30 runs off 60 deliveries.

The off-spinner pitched the ball around off, and Yashasvi Jaiswal attempted to defend but couldn't cover the turn. The Indian opening batter edged the delivery to slip, where Daryl Mitchell took a low catch. The home team lost their fourth wicket for just 70 runs on the board in the first innings of the game.

New Zealand Bowled Out For 259 Runs In First Innings

Earlier, the New Zealand cricket team scored 259 runs on a turning track in Pune after winning the toss. The visiting team was at 197/3 at one stage but they lost wickets at regular intervals. Washington Sundar picked up his maiden five-wicket haul and ended with 7/59 in his 23.1 overs on the opening day.

We Would Have Loved To Get Them Under 250 - Abhishek Nayar

Team India assistant coach Abhishek Nayar shared his thoughts on the team's performance after the first day of the Test match. Nayar admitted that they wanted to restrict New Zealand under 250 runs. He said that they were pleased to wrap up the innings early despite their impressive start.

"We always knew that the team batting first will be getting a few more runs than expected. We would have loved to get them under 250. But you expect that. These are good batting conditions. There is turn and we are happy on seeing that," Nayar said.

"All in all, happy that we could wrap up them early. When you are on day one, you want your fast bowlers to bowl. I just felt there were quite a few edges that went to the boundary. Those you can't control. In the hindsight, you want to tighten it up. All in all, it was a great effort. The first session is going to be interesting. There is some dew around and hopefully, the pitch has settled down," he added.
