Shreyas Iyer has said he and his teammates are heartbroken after Team India’s loss against Australia in the final of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023. Australia, on Sunday (November 19), beat India by six wickets at the Narendra Modi Stadium to clinch a sixth World Cup title.

Playing in front of a hostile 100,000-strong home crowd, Australia thoroughly dominated the proceedings in the title decider. Right from the toss till the end, the team from Down Under hardly made any mistakes. Asked to bat first, India were bowled out for a modest total of 240 runs despite half-centuries from KL Rahul and Virat Kohli.

The boundaries dried up once captain Rohit Sharma was dismissed for a 31-ball 47-run knock. India just could not get the momentum with the bat and huffed and puffed to 240. In reply, Australia made a shaky start and were reeling at 47 for 3 before a huge stand of 192 runs between Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne all but sealed the game for them.

Mohammed Siraj broke the stand when he dismissed Head with Australia just two runs away from victory. The opener departed after scoring 137 runs off 120 balls with the help of 15 fours and 4 sixes. Labuschagne, on the other hand, remained unbeaten on 58.

Shreyas Iyer heartbroken:

Shreyas Iyer, who was enjoying a stunning campaign in the second half of the competition, failed to get going in the final. The right-handed batter started his innings with a sublime four before being dismissed by Pat Cummins for 4.

On Monday (November 20), he took to X to express his feelings, saying that the Indian players are heartbroken, writing: “We’re heartbroken, it still hasn’t sunk in and it won’t for a while. My first World Cup was an experience that has taught me so much and made me grateful for everything that’s come my way.

“Thank you to the @BCCI, team management, support staff, my teammates and you the fans for backing us from the beginning right up until the end. And congratulations to the entire Australian team on a marvelous campaign,” he added.
