Rohit Sharma has opened up on Mumbai Indians' poor campaign in the ongoing Indian Premier League 2024 (IPL 2024). The five-time champions' disappointing campaign ended on a losing note on Friday (May 17).
Before the start of the season, Mumbai Indians took the big call to change their captain. Rohit Sharma, who was leading the team from 2013, had to step down as Hardik Pandya was named as the new captain. While the India skipper led Mumbai Indians to a record five IPL titles, he failed to do well as a captain from 2021 to 2023.
Mumbai Indians finally decided to change their captain. However, the change in captaincy did not change their fortunes as they finished at the bottom of the points table for the second time in three years. The Mumbai-based outfit opened its campaign with three straight defeats and just could not recover. They eventually finished their season with just four wins in 14 games.
Rohit Sharma on Mumbai Indians' poor campaign:
Speaking after Mumbai Indians' final league game of the season, Rohit Sharma said only the team is to blame for the poor performance as the players made too many mistakes. He also rued the team's failure to lose games that should have been won.
"Our season didn't go according to plan. We blame ourselves for this because we made too many mistakes during the season. We lost many games that we should have won, but that's the nature of the IPL. You get a few chances and when those chances come, you must grab them," Rohit said on JioCinema Match Centre Live.
With the bat, Rohit Sharma did play some fine knocks but struggled to deliver consistently. Overall, he scored 417 runs in 14 games with the help of one century and one half-century.
With the IPL campaign done and dusted, Rohit Sharma will now set his sights on the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup. He will be leading Team India in the marquee event and will be desperate to go all the way to end the team's long wait for an ICC trophy. India are in Group A along with Pakistan, Ireland, Canada, and the USA. The Men in Blue will open their campaign on June 5 against Ireland.
