Former India all-rounder Reetinder Sodhi believes that the Indian team is well and truly capable to defeat New Zealand in the final of the inaugural edition of the ICC World Test Championship, which is slated for Southampton from June 18th.
The BCCI has announced a 20-man squad plus 4 reserve players for the tour of the UK which includes the WTC final, and a 5-match Test series against England.
It would be the Kiwis which will start with an advantage over Virat Kohli’s side. Not only New Zealand are more suited to the English conditions, which are close to their home conditions, but also they will play a 2-Test series with Joe Root’s side before the WTC final, which gives them a better opportunity and more time than India to settle themselves in those conditions.
“The conditions will be adverse. The match is not in India, it is in England. But when we talk about Team India’s form, the way we play in adverse situations, these are not different conditions for us. We have players who can adapt. We have capable bowlers; our batting is fantastic. If we talk about our slip catching in Test matches, that is also very good,” Reetinder Sodhi said while speaking to India News.
If India plays to their potential, the WTC final will definitely be ours: Reetinder Sodhi
Reetinder Sodhi’s confidence comes from the fact the side is in supreme form having defeated Australia away and England at home in their last couple of Test series. He asserts that the players are now adept in handling pressure, unlike earlier times when they used to buckle under pressure in overseas conditions.

The 40-year-old former cricketer reckons India could win the WTC final comfortably if the players play to their potential.
“If we talk about a few years back, we used to come under some pressure, we used to face some difficulties, but if we talk about this team and their present form, about the history Team India, created on the Australia tour, there is nothing much to worry about. If India plays to their potential, the World Test Championship final will definitely be ours,” Sodhi concluded.
