Former Bangladesh fast bowler and captain Mashrafe Mortaza would be a great addition to the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) in a managerial capacity, the BCB president, Nazmul Hasan, said on Saturday.

Mortaza, ODI captain Tamim Iqbal, and the BCB President met in the President’s Box during the second Test between Bangladesh and Pakistan in Dhaka, according to a report in Cricbuzz. Tamim has already revealed that he would be happy to talk to the board regarding a possible slot for Mortaza in the team as a mentor.

Although the board is yet to make an offer to the former skipper, Hasan stated that they would be happy to acquire his services with an eye on the 2023 ODI World Cup. “We haven’t discussed such a thing yet. But if he wants to join, certainly we will be happy to see him on board,” Hasan told reporters yesterday.

Nazmul Hasan is not too concerned about Bangladesh’s recent performances

The Bangladesh team has been performing terribly of late, starting from the early exit in the recently concluded T20 World Cup. Mahmudullah and co. failed to win a single game in their Super 12 group, losing five out of five matches. Soon after, they were thrashed 0-2 by Pakistan in the 2-match home Test series. Despite the poor performances, Hasan defended the team saying it’s in a transition phase.

The main problem is that many of our key players are not available. Even if they are available, they will retire once. We all know that. Nobody plays cricket for a lifetime. So we have to find out their alternatives. We have to find out the best replacement by watching the options,” he said.

Hasan also mentioned that the BCB might give current head coach, Russell Domingo, a longer rope, taking back the earlier claim that Domingo’s future will be decided in January.

They (the selectors and the team management) asked for three months (after the home series against Pakistan) to see who fits where, and I cannot reject that. So a lot of things might happen in the meantime. I don’t want to disturb them now,” Hasan added.

Bangladesh’s next assignment will be their 2-match away Test series against New Zealand next month.
