Wear This 36 Like A Badge! Sunil Gavaskar Lauds Ravi Shastri's Coaching Tenure; Recalls His Motivational Words During India's Historic Test Series Victory In Australia

Sunil Gavaskar lauded Ravi Shastri for his role as India head coach. Sunil Gavaskar also praised Ravi Shastri for his role during India’s historic Test series victory against Australia in early January this year. Ravi Shastri retired as India’s head coach after ICC T20 World Cup 2021. Rahul Dravid has taken up the role after Shastri’s departure.

One of the highlights of Ravi Shastri’s coaching tenure is India’s Test series victory against Australia in January this year. India defeated Australia 2-1 in the Test series during an away tour. The hopes for India’s success was very low after India lost the 1st Test by 9 wickets, facing a 36-run all out in the 2nd innings. However, the Indian team bounced back even after key players getting injured and inexperienced youngsters taking up the field.

Ravi Shastri Played A Huge Role During India Test Series Victory Against Australia: Sunil Gavaskar

While speaking to Star Sports, former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar praised Ravi Shastri for his role behind India’s victory in the Test series against Australia. Gavaskar revealed how Shastri motivated the boys with his golden words.

“It obviously has got to be the way India bounced back earlier this year after being dismissed for 36 (in Adelaide Pink Ball Test). Because when something like that happens, the team tends to lose belief in itself, there is a sense of disappointment and there is a sense of giving up. And that is where Shastri played a huge role because from what I’ve read, is that he said that ‘you wear this 36 like a badge’, Sunil Gavaskar said.

“And then Ajinkya Rahane, the way he led the side in the three Tests, and of course everyone stepped up. We played almost like an A team, not even the regular team. But every player who played in that, every replaced player came in and did well. And that again tells you the kind of influence and input that Ravi Shastri had on the younger players and the fringe players who are waiting for their opportunities,” Sunil Gavaskar further said.

India 2-1 victory in the series became a historic moment as India defeated Australia at The Gabba in the 4th Test, where Australia were undefeated in Tests since 1988. After India lost the 1st Test, Virat Kohli left the series due to paternal leave and Ajinkya Rahane led the side in the rest three games.

Rishabh Pant was widely appreciated for his role in batting in the 4th Test, as he slammed an unbeaten 89-run knock while chasing the 328-run target in the final innings.
