Cricket West Indies (CWI) has announced a 15-member squad for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2026. The squad is formed in South Africa, as they will play a three-match T20I series against South Africa from January 27 to 31. Captained by Shai Hope, the West Indies have assembled a squad on paper with some strengths and weaknesses.
Since the inception of the Twenty20 format, multiple West Indian cricketers have marked their talents on positive notes, while, mostly due to lack of consistency, some cricketers quickly vanished from the radar. The squad CWI has announced also has some strong points as well as some weak links.
This article will evaluate the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and possible threats to the West Indies cricket team during the 2026 World Cup.
SWOT analysis of the West Indies cricket team:
Strengths - Firepower, Variety, All-rounders:
Whenever we discuss the West Indies cricket team on the basis of the T20 format, it is undeniable that the Windies are capable of producing an immense amount of flair in a short time. The shortest format of the game becomes a perfect stage for them to showcase their raw power. Across the globe, there are many West Indian talents who have been performing with dominance, including in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
As the CWI mentioned in their official press release, the squad is filled with "balance, extensive experience, and a touch of mystery." Along with Hope, batters like Shimron Hetmyer, Sherfane Rutherford, Roston Chase, Matthew Forde, and Brandon King are capable of scoring big runs if they are able to find the sweet spot.
The West Indian cricket board also keeps Johnson Charles as the backup wicketkeeper and backup power hitter who can bulldoze over the opposition bowling unit as an opener.
Inclusions of multiple all-rounders like Forde, Chase, Romario Shepherd, and Jason Holder provide much-needed balance in the squad.
Weaknesses - Inconsistency, Fitness:
The only weakness the West Indies cricket team has is their inconsistent form. For years, the former World Cup winners have been dealing with the issue; again and again, they failed to play with top-most consistency through a tournament.
Ahead of the T20 World Cup 2026, they are dealing with fitness concerns as well. Alzarri Joseph, a prominent wicket-taking bowler, has been ruled out.
"Alzarri Joseph continues his return-to-play process after injury. While he has made significant progress, he has not yet been cleared for high-intensity competition and will continue to work closely with CWI’s medical and performance teams," Cricket West Indies informed.
Opportunities - X-Factor, conditions, momentum:
The well-balanced squad on paper has all the potential to attract good traction in the T20 World Cup. Players like Shepherd, Charles, Hope, Hetmyer, Holder, and Rutherford are well aware of the subcontinental conditions.
As the upcoming 2026 T20 World Cup will be jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka, West Indian batters will be trying to make some carnage with their blades, which they did on multiple previous occasions during their stints with their respective franchise teams.
It is the subcontinental conditions that can help the team to become massively dangerous during the matches. Akeal Hosein, the spinner who recently performed well for the West Indies, can be their x-factor.
Threats - England, Pressure:
The West Indies is in Group C along with Italy, Nepal, Scotland, and England. The match against England will test the mettle of the West Indies cricket team. Additionally, it will be interesting to see how they can handle the pressure situations, keeping their nerves strong.
West Indies Squad for the ICC T20 World Cup:
Shai Hope (Captain), Johnson Charles, Roston Chase, Matthew Forde, Shimron Hetmyer, Jason Holder, Akeal Hosein, Shamar Joseph, Brandon King, Gudakesh Motie, Rovman Powell, Sherfane Rutherford, Quentin Sampson, Jayden Seales, and Romario Shepherd.
