Former India bowling coach Paras Mhambrey has spoken about the future of Mohammed Shami in a recent interview. He feels that the Indian Cricket Board should talk to Mohammed Shami about his future with Indian cricket and Gautam Gambhir should get the best out of him.

Mohammed Shami is a regular Indian pacer for Team India currently with the likes of Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, who are also regulars in Tests, ODIs, and T20Is. However, he got injured after the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 last year, where he put up a phenomenal performance getting 5 and 7-wicket hauls in crucial games.

However, Shami got injured after the tournament and has not played a single tournament since that time. He also missed IPL 2024 and ICC T20 World Cup 2024 recently. Shami is part of Gujarat Titans in the IPL and was the highest wicket-taker in the last season.

What does Mohammed Shami want? Paras Mhambrey wants the board to clarify facts

During an interview with The Telegraph, outgoing bowling coach Paras Mhambrey said that BCCI selectors should have a word with Mohammed Shami about what he wants his future to be with the national side. He also feels India's new head coach Gautam Gambhir will take the best out of him.

"The staff should talk to Shami and find out what he wants to do. He’s no longer young, so where does he fit in and how many more years does he look to play? How do we use him smartly? I’m sure whoever comes with Gauti will find out how to get the best of Shami," he said.

Paras Mhambrey also feels Shami's fitness cannot be compared with a youngster who has just joined the national side. Players like Mukesh Kumar, Avesh Khan, and Arshdeep Singh are some emerging youngsters in the pace department for India.

“Individual fitness varies and can’t be of the same level. So, the players have to be treated differently. You can’t compare a Shami with some youngster who has just come in. You have to understand what the value of Shami is?”, he said.

We need Jasprit Bumrah at his peak in Australia: Paras Mhambrey

Speaking about Jasprit Bumrah, Paras Mhambrey said Jasprit Bumrah is one of the crucial bowlers for Team India and should be picked in Test cricket regularly and the board should handle his workload.

"You’ve got to be smart enough to handle Jasprit Bumrah because he’s one of the very few bowlers who look forward to playing Test cricket", Paras Mhabhray said.

He also added that Team India needs Jasprit Bumrah at his prime in the Australia Test series in November 2024. India is set to tour Australia for a five-match Test series in November 2024.

"Going forward, there are a lot of Tests to be played alongside securing points for the World Test Championship, and the biggest challenge is in Australia, where you need Jassi at his prime," Mhambrey further said during the interview.

Meanwhile, Paras Mhambrey was the bowling coach of the Indian Team that won the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. With Rahul Dravid, his term also ended with the Indian Team. Now, there are talks about Zaheer Khan or Laxmipathy Balaji taking over the role with new Head Coach Gautam Gambhir.
