Afghanistan end West Indies' direct qualification hopes
In a rain-affected match in Bready, Afghanistan registered a 92-run victory over Ireland on Friday, August 7. The result proved decisive in the 2027 ODI World Cup qualification race as Afghanistan secured a direct place in the tournament.
The 2027 World Cup will be jointly hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia across 12 venues. As co-hosts, South Africa and Zimbabwe already have automatic qualification berths. The remaining seven direct spots are determined by the ICC ODI rankings, with September 30, 2026, set as the cut-off date.
West Indies are currently 10th in the ICC ODI rankings, behind Afghanistan in eighth and Bangladesh in ninth. Zimbabwe, meanwhile, are ranked 11th but already have an automatic berth as co-hosts. Therefore, the top-ranked teams effectively occupy the remaining direct qualification places.
Afghanistan's victory over Ireland meant West Indies could no longer move into the required positions before the September 30 deadline. As a result, the Caribbean side's upcoming ODI series against India will not change their direct qualification status.
West Indies face third straight World Cup qualification campaign
This is not the first time West Indies have found themselves outside the automatic qualification places.
The Caribbean side also failed to secure direct qualification for the 2019 and 2023 ODI World Cups. They successfully came through the qualifiers in 2019 to reach the main tournament, but suffered a major setback four years later when they were eliminated in the 2023 World Cup qualifiers and missed the tournament in India.
West Indies will therefore have to take the qualification route once again if they are to feature in the 2027 edition.
Can West Indies still qualify directly for the 2027 World Cup?
No. West Indies cannot qualify directly for the 2027 ODI World Cup anymore.
The West Indies will play a three-match ODI series against India in September and October, with the first two matches scheduled for September 27 in Thiruvananthapuram and September 30 in Guwahati.
However, even winning both of those matches will not take West Indies into the direct qualification places. Their direct qualification fate was effectively sealed by Afghanistan's 92-run victory over Ireland, as the rankings cut-off arrives on September 30.
Therefore, the India series will be important for West Indies' ODI preparations and momentum, but it can no longer provide them with a route into the World Cup through the rankings.
