Indian opener Rohit Sharma took all those who have criticized the nature of the track dished out during the second Test match in Chennai to the cleaners during the virtual press-conference ahead of the pink-ball Test in Ahmedabad.

The raging turner that was dished out in the second Test came under huge scrutiny from former England cricketers like Michael Vaughan, David Lloyd, and former Australian opener Mark Waugh. The trio lambasted the BCCI for making a track that started offering turn from the first morning.

While Michael Vaughan termed the pitch as ‘shocker’ and a ‘beach’, Mark Waugh reckoned that having a pitch that offers turn from the first morning is unacceptable. David Lloyd, on the other hand, went one step ahead and said that there wasn’t even a pitch in the first place.

Rohit Sharma, who schooled the visitors on how to bat on a turner, with a match-defining 161 on the opening day, was asked about the criticism that the track has garnered from the foreign media and retired English and Australian cricketers.

Rohit did not mince his words, stating that when nobody cares about the Indian team when they travel overseas, then why should they care about them. The Indian opener added that there is a reason that every team makes use of the home advantage and if people have issues with India using the conditions to their advantage then the ICC should remove the home and away concept and make a rule that Test matches can only be played on certain kind of tracks.

The stylish opener added that the pitch was the same for both sides and hence one should not make a mountain out of a molehill.

”When we travel overseas no one thinks about us, so why should we think about them? The ICC should do one thing- they should remove the home and away concept and make a rule that the pitches should be of a certain manner. We never complain about the pitches that are dished out to us when we play overseas,” said Rohit Sharma.

“The pitch is the same for both teams. So I don’t know why there’s so much talk about the pitch. People say that the pitch shouldn’t be a certain type of way, but they have been like this in India for years. Every team plays to their strengths at home, and similarly, we do what our team prefers in India.” Rohit Sharma added.

Rohit Sharma further stated that the Indian team never cribs about the pitches that are offered to them when they travel overseas. Instead, they make plans to counter the conditions as they love to prove themselves in challenging conditions.

“As batsmen, we never think about the pitch. We only think about our plans. If it’s a turning pitch, whether we have to play the sweep or come down the track. If it’s a seaming pitch, whether we have to leave balls, stand outside the crease or play defensively. We need to prepare our mind according to the pitch. You are this level playing for India because you know how to adjust to the conditions. In these challenging conditions, you need to prove that. Team India loves playing in challenging conditions, where things are against you.” Rohit Sharma signed off.
