Speculations are rife surrounding Virat Kohli‘s future in T20Is. Along with Rohit Sharma, the former India skipper has not played a T20I for India since the conclusion of the 2022 T20 World Cup.
It was widely expected that neither Rohit Sharma nor Virat Kohli would be selected for next year’s T20 World Cup after not playing a T20I for over a year. However, things have changed after the ODI World Cup. While Rohit is reportedly in contention to play in the tournament, Virat Kohli is likely to miss out. As per media reports, the decision was taken during a five-hour-long meeting in Delhi after the ODI World Cup.
The meeting was attended by top BCCI officials, captain Rohit Sharma, head coach Rahul Dravid, and the selection committee led by Ajit Agarkar. According to a report, the BCCI officials prepared a roadmap for the next year’s T20 World Cup scheduled to be played in the Caribbeans and the United States in June 2024.
Virat Kohli unlikely to play next T20 World Cup:
Hindi news outlet Dainik Jagran has reported that while Rohit Sharma as well as senior pacer Jasprit Bumrah are automatic choices in the T20I XI for the World Cup, Virat Kohli’s spot in the squad is not guaranteed. One of the reasons behind the situation with the star batsman is his strike rate during the ODI World Cup. While Rohit maintained a strike-rate of 125, his predecessor had a strike-rate of just over 90.
As a result, he is not the preferred choice at No.3 in T20Is. A BCCI official present in the meeting told Jagran that the selectors and the board want a player who can play attacking cricket from the word go. Wicketkeeper-batsman Ishan Kishan is now the front-runner to bat at No.3. The situation for Kohli, however, could change if he performs well in the IPL.
The BCCI official further said the selectors and other senior members of the board will have a discussion with Kohli soon regarding his plans for the T20Is. The right-handed batsman will be seen in action soon when India takes on South Africa in a two-match Test series.
