On the occasion of the 15th anniversary of India’s ICC T20, World Cup 2007 victory, former India National Cricket Team pacer S Sreesanth explained the reason behind MS Dhoni’s decision to give the final over of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2007 final to relatively unknown commodity Joginder Sharma.

Dhoni-led India National Cricket Team won the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2007 by defeating Pakistan National Cricket Team in the final by 5 runs at the Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg.

During the last over of the match, while chasing the 158-run target, Pakistan batter Misbah-ul-Haq had hit a six on the 2nd delivery to Joginder Sharma, and the Men In Green only needed 6 runs from 4 balls to win the inaugural edition of the T20 World Cup. However, on the third delivery, Misbah-ul-Haq played a scoop shot off a length ball and was caught by Sreesanth at short fine-leg and Pakistan lost the match.

Speaking on Star Sports’ programme ‘Class of 2007: The Reunion of ’07 Champions’ S Sreesanth revealed that Dhoni knew about the match-winning abilities of Joginder and that’s why he handed the last over to him in the blockbuster game.

“Dhoni bhai takes decisions like that and Dhoni bhai knows Jogi bhai very well,” Sreesanth told Star Sports.

“Lot of people don’t know that we used to play for Indian Airlines. Dhoni bhai, me, Yuvi paa, Bhajju paa, we all used to play for Indian Airlines. Joginder Sharma used to play for ONGC. So there were a lot of matches when we played for these companies, in Delhi or elsewhere,” he revealed.

“So Dhoni bhai knows Jogi bhai’s winning attitude. And he knows Jogi bhai has done it not just once and twice, he has done it many times. He had a lot of faith in him,” he said.

The 39-year-old further lavished praise on the captaincy of Dhoni, who led India to triumphs in the T20 World Cup, ODI World Cup and Champions Trophy.

“And that’s what I said earlier. Who’s the best captain? Those who work with individuals and believe in the players. And even when the players don’t believe in themselves, the great captains will come up to you and make you believe in your belief system,” the former India pacer said.

“So I think I was not surprised. I was very confident that whatever decision Dhoni bhai has been taking till then were successful so I was just praying that it works out.”
