Bangladesh head coach Russell Domingo said the players failed to hold patience in the last two sessions on the second day of the second Test in St Lucia.

Bangladesh started the day with four wickets in the first session and conceded just 70 runs. As West Indies openers Kraigg Brathwaite (51) and John Campbell (45) put 100 runs together, Shoriful Islam broke the deadlock with the left-hander’s wicket.

Medium-pacer Khaled Ahmed got two wickets in the next over as Bangladesh picked three scalps in the space of 12 balls to reduce the hosts to 132/4 after 39 overs.

Kyle Mayers and Jermaine Blackwood stitched a 116-run partnership for the fifth wicket as West Indies found its momentum back in the second session.

Blackwood departed early in the final session but Mayers went on to add another 92 runs with wicketkeeper Joshua Da Silva.

The 29-year-old Mayers hit his second Test hundred with the help of 15 fours and a couple of sixes. West Indies took a lead of 106 in the first inning as Mayers remained undefeated on 126 on the second day.

We are good for one session and then we have one really bad session: Russel Domingo

Domingo was upset with Bangladesh as they failed to capitalise on the early wickets in the first session and build pressure on West Indies. The Bangladesh head coach mentioned the players lost patience in the last two sessions.

“It is the story of our Test match cricket at the moment. We are good for one session and then we have one really bad session. Guys were not patient. They couldn’t string together enough tight overs like we did in the first session,” Domingo said in the press conference after the second day’s play.

“They were searching for wickets, bowled a few soft balls, came around the wicket when it should be over the wicket. They just made basic errors by not being patient enough. It was very disappointing the way we bowled after lunch.

“The message is always to bowl dots, building pressure, stay in control of the run-rate. As soon as you go looking for wickets, you just bowl too many soft balls. Being patient, being disciplined are the sort of messages that we try to emphasize. We do it for one session but we can’t do it for another session,” the Bangladesh coach added.

Bangladesh were bowled out for 234 on the first day with Liton Das (51) and Tamim Iqbal (46) adding some handful of contributions. Domingo reiterated batting coach Jamie Siddons’ thoughts that the team needs to bat longer to post a mammoth total.
