Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah is widely considered one of the best modern-era fast bowlers and one of the greatest Indian cricketers that has ever been, but his journey into the player he is today was not easy at all, as there was a lack of support for him to evolve his game.
After the second Test match of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 in Adelaide, Bumrah shared insights about his journey to becoming one of the world’s top bowlers. Reflecting on his early days, Bumrah admitted that many doubted his potential due to his unusual bowling action.
Jasprit Bumrah talks about the challenges that shaped his career
The Indian pacer, who is known for his unique bowling action and incredible skill, has noted that critics were doubting his potential and even predicted his style wouldn’t sustain him for long, and due to this he didn’t get much guidance or support during his early years.
Jasprit Bumrah said on Fox Cricket: “I don’t think a lot of people believed in me because they thought that this bowling action will not last for long. He’ll play for six months, seven months. So not really a lot of people worked on me or, you know, gave me inputs that, you know, I think this is useful or you should stop doing that because. I don’t think they saw a lot of merit.”
It could break any player, but Jasprit Bumrah stood tall, and instead of being discouraged, he used the lack of external support as an opportunity to strengthen his skills and determination. Bumrah stressed that not having any support allowed him to focus on refining his skills independently.
I had to find out solutions on my own: Jasprit Bumrah
The right-arm fast bowler further revealed that he focused on building his mental toughness and trusted his self-belief to overcome challenges. Bumrah refined his natural talent without being forced to follow traditional techniques and find solutions and grow as a bowler.
Over time, this approach not only allowed Bumrah to maintain his unique bowling action but also enabled him to develop a deeper understanding of his game and become India’s premier fast bowler in all three formats of the game, thanks to his resilience, determination, and self-confidence.

The 31-year-old pacer added, “I think that worked out in my favour because. I was self-reliant then and I had to have a lot of self-belief and find out solutions on my own. So yes, nobody tried to change me, but nobody gave any extra solutions. So that worked out for the best in the greater interest, but then that helped me develop, you know.”
I rely on my own instincts and gut: Bumrah
The vice-captain of the Indian cricket team in Tests opened up about his unorthodox style and revealed why he relies on it. The Indian pacer also explained how a delay in his introduction to the game led him to learn by observing others and still relying on his own instincts.
Bumrah signed off by saying, “I started my cricket quite late at 16, 17. I’d got no formal coaching ever. So, I learned everything through the television and somehow picked up cues and kept on finding my own solutions. So that’s worked with me till date that. I rely on my own instincts and gut.”
