Australian youngster Will Pucovski has been named in a group of eight players to travel to Chennai in India for a 10-day training camp next month.
Cricket Australia’s ties with the MRF Pace Foundation have allowed Australian selectors to send a young group of emerging players to train at Chennai. The list includes quality batters and spin bowlers as well. The camp is scheduled to be held in the capital city of Tamil Nadu from August 7 to August 17.
Glenn McGrath, Thilan Samarveera to coach Australian players MRF Pace Foundation
According to a report by ESPNcricinfo, the eight Australian players will join local talent in the training session, one one-day match and a two-day game.
Former Sri Lanka batter Thilan Samarveera, who was part of the coaching staff of Australia A team for the Sri Lanka tour in June- July period, will coach the group. Former Australian pacer Glenn McGrath, who is the consultant to the MRF Academy in Chennai, will also be part of the coaching group for these players.
“It is exciting to renew the partnership with the MRF Academy and provide this group of young players with a truly unique experience. Some players have toured the subcontinent in the past so this trip will further refine their skills while others will gain valuable new experience in these testing conditions,” said selector Tony Dodemaide, who will also be the tour manager for the Australians.
Will Pucovski and his injury woes
Pucovski, who made his Test debut against India in Sydney in 2020, has an infamous record with concussion injuries. Just at the age of 24, he has faced 11 concussions with the last one occurring in February during a Sheffield Shield game between South Australia and Victoria.
He made a successful return at the end of the domestic season in April, scoring 59 against Western Australia. George Bailey-led selection panel decided not to play him for the Australia A team in the Sri Lanka tour. The selectors wanted to give him more chances without any interruption before the youngster makes his return either to the national or A teams.
Pucovski will join other Australian internationals Josh Philippe and Matthew Kunhemann in the eight-man group. Australia A players Henry Hunt, Tanveer Sangha and Todd Murphy have also been named in the visiting group to Chennai. Cooper Connolly and Teague Wyllie, who were part of the Australia U19 team in the U19 World Cup in the Caribbean, will be the youngest members of the group.
