The Women’s T20 Challenge 2022 is coming back for its fourth edition after it was skipped in IPL 2021 due to the break out of covid and the games being played at two different times of the year. The series was last played in 2020 with Trailblazers becoming the champions for the first time beating Supernovas in the final. Matches in the 2022 edition will be played between May 23 to 28 in Pune alongside the IPL 2022 playoffs.
History of The Women’s T20 Challenge
The first series was played in 2018 with just two teams. The Supernovas were led by Smriti Mandhana and the Trailblazers were led by Harmanpreet Kaur. It included overseas stars including Ellyse Perry, Danielle Wyatt, Suzie Bates, and Beth Mooney among others. Supernovas led by Mandhana won the title in the first year.
In 2019, a third-team named Velocity was added to the roster. It was led by former Indian skipper Mithali Raj. The matches were held alongside the IPL 2019 playoffs in a round-robin format. The Supernovas beat Velocity to win the title that year.
2020 saw the IPL being moved out of India for the very first time and played in the UAE. The Women’s tournament was also moved out and played in Sharjah. All four matches were played in Sharjah with Trailblazers becoming the champions for the first time beating Supernovas in the final.
2021: Tournament Cancelled
The Women’s T20 Challenge was canceled in 2021 due to the rise in covid cases. The IPL that year was played in two halves. The first half was played in India in Match-April followed by the second half in the UAE in September-October.
The Return
With the BCCI successfully hosting the IPL 2022 in India, the women’s tournament also returned this time with an even bigger goal. The series is being seen as a dress rehearsal with one eye on Women’s IPL from 2023. The BCCI has already spoken about getting the necessary arrangements done so that Women’s IPL can be started next year.
