Veteran opener David Warner has confirmed that he will not accept a Cricket Australia contract next year. David Warner expressed his reluctance to be bound by the contracting system, citing it as a potential inconvenience and a hindrance at this stage of his career.
David Warner already announced his intention to retire from Test cricket after the New Year’s match against Pakistan at the SCG in January. However, the southpaw hasn’t finalized plans beyond a five-match T20I series in India, which is scheduled to begin on November 23.
Won’t Be Taking A Contract – David Warner
David Warner confirmed that he won’t be accepting a Cricket Australia contract, expressing concerns about the binding nature of the contracting system. He highlighted that the system requires playing a specific number of matches for an upgrade.
“I won’t be taking a contract, definitely not. How the system works in Australia is that if you play five (T20) games or ODIs, or three Tests, you get upgraded and then you’re legally bound by the contracting system with sponsors and stuff,” Warner said.
“That’s something that becomes a bit of a pain in the backside, especially at my stage of my career.”
“So I don’t want to be signed to that agreement and that’s something I have to think about moving forward because if you’re going to get a low contract, it’s going to cost you a lot in the long run with sponsorships.”
They’re Potentially On My Horizon – David Warner
David Warner mentioned that he needs to assess the schedule, including the ICC Future Tours and the Champions Trophy 2025. He indicated that these tournaments are potentially on his horizon.
“I’ve got to sit back and have a look at what the schedule is, the (ICC) Future Tours schedule and you’ve got a Champions Trophy that’s coming up as well. So they’re potentially on my horizon,” Warner further added.
The 37-year-old will be next seen in action during the second semi-final match of the ICC World Cup 2023 at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Thursday, November 16.
