Former selector Sarandeep Singh backed Suryakumar Yadav’s selection in the upcoming ODI World Cup, which is scheduled to be played at home later this year. Sarandeep Singh believes that the selectors and team management should back Suryakumar Yadav ahead of the marquee event, given his performances in the shorter format of the game.

The middle-order batter Suryakumar Yadav has failed to cement his place in the squad with his performances in the three-match ODI series against Australia at home. The 32-year-old got a chance in the Indian ODI setup after Shreyas Iyer was ruled out of the series due to injury. He registered three back-to-back golden ducks in the recently concluded series.

In an exclusive chat with News18 CricketNext, Sarandeep Singh praised Suryakumar Yadav as a fantastic cricketer and said that he has the ability to turn things around himself.

“Suryakumar Yadav is a fantastic cricketer. Just feel bad for him that he got out on zero in the three games against Australia, but he has the ability to turn it around for himself,” Sarandeep Singh said.

Suryakumar Yadav Has Been Phenomenal – Sarandeep Singh

Sarandeep Singh said that Suryakumar Yadav scored a lot of runs in domestic cricket before making his India debut. The former Indian selector believes that the team management should back Surya and give him a chance in the World Cup squad.

“I definitely see him in the World Cup squad. It’s about backing the player. When we were the selectors, we used to have a plan and a team and we used to back them till the end. Moreover, SKY has been phenomenal in the last one year.”

“He is batting exceptionally well. He has scored loads of runs in domestic cricket and has made his way into the side. So, if someone asks (for) my opinion, I would definitely give him another opportunity,” he added.

Suryakumar Yadav is part of the Mumbai Indians (MI) squad in the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The Rohit Sharma-led team will face the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in their opening match at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Sunday, April 2.
