"Would frustrate me as coach...": Glenn Maxwell blasted as his axing from PBKS XI demanded

Former New Zealand pacer Simon Doull has advised Punjab Kings (PBKS) captain Shreyas Iyer and coach Ricky Ponting to drop Glenn Maxwell for the upcoming IPL 2025 match. Doull said that the team management should include Azmatullah Omarzai or Josh Inglis against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).
Punjab Kings will face Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Chandigarh on April 15. The Shreyas Iyer-led team will be looking to bounce back after a heavy loss to SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH), where they failed to defend a 246-run target in Hyderabad.
Glenn Maxwell Has Failed to Live Up to Expectations in IPL 2025
Punjab Kings have won three out of five matches in the IPL 2025 season. Glenn Maxwell has struggled to make an impact so far in the tournament. The Australian all-rounder has failed to deliver with the bat, amassing only 34 runs in four innings at a poor average of 8.50 and a strike rate of 109.68.
He recorded scores of 0, 30, 1, and 3. The right-handed batter scored a 30-run knock against Rajasthan Royals, but it lacked fluency. With the ball, he has taken three wickets, but his overall performances have been disappointing. The team management is yet to make a final decision on his exclusion.
I Think Glenn Maxwell Has Had His Run - Simon Doull
Simon Doull said that Punjab Kings should consider dropping Glenn Maxwell and give opportunities to either Azmatullah Omarzai or Josh Inglis. The former New Zealand pacer said that Maxwell has not justified his place in the team.
“I think Maxwell has had his run. I mean, just the way he's getting out at the moment, it would frustrate me as a coach,” Doull said on Cricbuzz.
“That's the disappointing thing, I think, from their point of view. So Omarzai's in for him, Inglis in for him, would be something I'd probably look at,” he added.
Big Loss for Them in Lockie Ferguson - Simon Doull
Punjab Kings are likely to be without pacer Lockie Ferguson for the rest of IPL 2025 after he picked up an injury during their match against SunRisers Hyderabad. The New Zealand quick bowled just two deliveries before walking off the field.
Simon Doull said that Ferguson’s unavailability could have impacted the outcome of that match. He pointed out that Punjab had to rely on bowlers like Marcus Stoinis.
"Big loss for them in Lockie Ferguson. He bowled two balls in that game. Remember now, that might have made quite a big difference in that run chase. I think, you know, they had to go to Stoinis, they had to go to others, when they would probably have preferred Lockie's pace through the middle," said Doull.
"So he is now out, which I'm not sure for how long, so that leaves a bit of a hole in their genuine pace bowling options," he added.
