Former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir believes that India’s resources in Tests are abundant and enriched in quality, however, their middle-order in limited-overs is quite unsettled.

Gambhir reckoned that Virat Kohli left the Test squad in a ‘healthy’ state while the white-ball formats’ team is not so strong at the moment. Rohit Sharma has taken over and is expected to build a team for the 2022 T20 World Cup and the 2023 ODI World Cup.

Between the last Test and ODI series, the new space has been hogged by Virat resigning from Test captaincy. I think it is an individual’s call and that is how it should be treated. I think Virat left the Indian Test team in good health but I can’t say the same about white-ball cricket.

Our bowling resources in Test matches are a neighbour’s envy and owner’s pride. They have shown time and again that they are the engine room for a team’s performance. In limited-overs cricket, I’d have liked to see a more settled middle-order which Virat couldn’t create,” Gambhir wrote in his column for ToI.

“Rohit should lead, Rahul his deputy in all three formats” – Gautam Gambhir

Now that Kohli has given up captaincy in the Test format as well, there is no obvious candidate for the role. Rohit might have taken over in the ODIs and T20Is but the selectors might have a different person in mind for the Tests. Gambhir, however, feels the Mumbaikar should be the skipper.

In my book, Rohit Sharma should lead India across formats with Rahul as his deputy. One captain across formats will ensure consistency in style and approach of the Indian team especially considering that we have another T20 World Cup later this year,” Gambhir added.
