WPL 2024: Second Edition Of WPL To Be Played In Bengaluru And Delhi: Report

The BCCI is reportedly planning a caravan model for the second edition of the Women’s Premier League (WPL 2024). The inaugural edition in 2023 was held entirely in Mumbai.

The inaugural edition of the competition was held in March 2023. Five teams – Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Delhi Capitals, UP Warriorz, and Gujarat Giants – participated in the historic first season of the WPL. All the matches were held in Mumbai’s Brabourne Stadium and DY Patil Stadium.

Mumbai Indians won the first season of the tournament by defeating Delhi Capitals in the final. Both Delhi and Mumbai had won 6 of their 8 league games before setting up a mouth-watering clash in the title decider. UP Warriorz finished at the third spot with 4 wins followed by Royal Challengers Bangalore and Gujarat Giants who had finished with two wins each.

WPL 2024 to have caravan model:

Unlike the first season, the second season of the WPL is likely to be played in two cities. According to a report in the Cricbuzz, the BCCI is planning a caravan model for WPL 2024. Bengaluru and Delhi have been identified as the venues for the tournament.

If the BCCI approves the caravan model, the league games will take place in Bengaluru while Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium will be the venue for the play-offs and final. The BCCI had initially planned multiple venues for the second edition of the WPL and was on the lookout for a state that can host the league in two centers. However, they could come up with only two options – Mumbai and another center, which the BCCI was not keen on.

Gujarat was another option but it was felt that the colossal Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad would be too huge for the matches. The board eventually decided to finalize Bengaluru and Delhi as the venues. The report further stated that WPL 2024 is likely to take place between February 22 and March 17.

The news outlet also reported that the BCCI is still in the dark about the dates and venues for IPL 2024. The schedule and the venues will depend on the General Elections date. The report stated that there is a likelihood that the IPL too may see a caravan model.
