WPL 2026 Retentions Announced
Women's Premier League is set to see a mega auction this time around, which is expected to be held between November 26 and 29. Before the event, the governing council of the league made some strict rules and regulations for the retentions.
Each franchise was informed that they will be allowed to retain a maximum of five players, including direct retentions or the Right to Match (RTM) option.
The retention price slabs were also shared by the governing council, which went like - INR 3.50 crore, INR 2.50 crore, INR 1.75 crore, INR 1 crore, and INR 50 lakh - for the five retained players.
As per the guidelines, the franchises were allowed to retain a maximum of three Indian capped players, two overseas players, or two uncapped Indian players. Depending on the number of players retained, the corresponding deductions from the purse of the teams were: Rs 9.25 crore for five players, Rs 8.75 crore for four, Rs 7.75 crore for three, Rs 6 crore for two, and Rs 3.5 crore for one.
Notably, it has been made mandatory by the governing council to have at least one uncapped player in the squad as a retention for a team that opts to retain all five players. Each uncapped player retained will be paid INR 50 lakh.
Just like the Indian Premier League (IPL), the WPL teams were given the flexibility to pay the players more than the prescribed slabs, and the extra amount was to be deducted from their purse. Also, the teams retaining four players will get one RTM, while those retaining three will have two RTMs available, and so on. Overall, the teams will have a purse of INR 15 crore at the auction.
