Team India middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer will be hoping to keep fit for the World Test Championship (WTC) final and the 2023 ODI World Cup, which is scheduled to be held at home in October and November. With two major ICC tournaments this year, Shreyas Iyer reportedly decided not to undergo surgery for his back injury.
Shreyas Iyer has been suffering from a back injury for a long time. The right-handed batter missed a few matches this year due to injury, as he wasn’t part of the ODI series against New Zealand at home in January. Iyer was ruled out of the first test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) and the recently concluded ODI series against Australia.

According to Cricbuzz, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) captain has reported to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bangalore for periodic treatment for a back injury. Shreyas has taken an injection on Wednesday, March 29, and his recovery period will be decided by the NCA coaching staff. The workload of other Indian players in the IPL will be monitored by the NCA.
“He has met the specialist and the NCA officials. All are on the same page that the operation can be deferred. He will follow the experts’ advice,” cricbuzz reported.
The 28-year-old believes that the surgery will keep him out of action for at least six months. Shreyas Iyer wants to keep him available for the selection for the World Cup final against Australia, which is set to be played at the Oval in London from June 7. Iyer didn’t want to miss the opportunity to represent India in the World Cup, as he came close to being picked in the previous editions.

Shreyas’ Absence Will Make A Difference – Chandrakant Pandit
Kolkata Knight Riders coach Chandrakant Pandit said that Shreyas Iyer would be missed in the squad, hoping he would be available for the later stages of the tournament.
“Shreyas’ absence will make a difference since he is important, but this is truly unfortunate. We are hoping Shreyas will be back very soon and that will make a lot of difference to the team,” coach Chandrakant Pandit said on Tuesday.
Nitish Rana was named interim captain in the absence of Iyer for IPL 2023. The KKR will start their campaign in the mega tournament against the Punjab Kings (PBKS) at the Punjab Cricket Association’s IS Bindra Stadium, Mohali, on Saturday, April 1.
