WTC Points Table: Updated ICC World Test Championship Points Table After SL vs PAK 1st Test: Pakistan have opened their account in the third cycle of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) with an impressive 4-wicket win over Sri Lanka in the first Test on Thursday (July 20).

Set a target of 131 runs, Pakistan crossed the finishing line in the first session of the final day in Galle. The visitors began their chase on a nervous note as they lost three quick wickets. Prabath Jayasuriya gave Sri Lanka the first breakthrough by dismissing Abdullah Shafique before sending back Shan Masood to leave Pakistan reeling at 36 for 2.

Two runs later, night watchman Noman Ali was run out as Pakistan ended day four on 48 for 3. On the final day, skipper Babar Azam and Imam-ul-Haq added 31 runs to the overnight score before Prabath Jayasuriya struck again to remove the former for 24 and leave Pakistan 4 down for 78 runs.

Imam and Saud Shakeel then all but sealed the game for their team by adding 43 runs for the fifth wicket. Ramesh Mendis broke the stand by dismissing Shakeel for 30. Imam then went on to complete his fifty and guide his team to victory.

Earlier in the game, Sri Lanka were all out for 312 runs in the first innings with Dhananjaya de Silva scoring a fine century. In reply, Pakistan were reeling at 101 for 5 but Saud Shakeel’s maiden double century in Tests helped them score 461 runs. Trailing Pakistan by 149 runs, Sri Lanka scored 279 runs in the second innings. Spinners Abrar Ahmed and Noman Ali picked up three wickets apiece for Pakistan in the second innings.

Thanks to the win, Pakistan have opened their campaign in WTC 2023-25 cycle in style. Pakistan and India are occupying the top two spots after starting their respective WTC campaign with a win. Reigning world champions Australia are third with 22 points while England are in the fourth spot with 10 points.
