Former Indian cricketer WV Raman praised Washington Sundar for his all-round abilities, stating that he performed well for India despite getting limited opportunities. WV Raman highlighted that the team management did not fully utilize Washington Sundar’s potential.
Washington Sundar was named as the replacement for injured Axar Patel in the Asia Cup final. He didn’t get a chance to bat or bowl in India’s 10-wicket victory against Sri Lanka. However, Ravichandran Ashwin was preferred over him in the ODI series against Australia.
Washington Sundar Is Not Being Encouraged – WV Raman
Speaking to the Times of India during the Asian Games 2023, WV Raman emphasized the importance of maximizing Washington Sundar’s skills more effectively.
“We’ve been talking about lack of all-rounders, but here we have a very good potential all-rounder in Washington Sundar. Unfortunately, what has happened is, despite the fact that he’s proved his batting credentials, time and again in all formats, in the limited opportunities he got, he is not being encouraged. We have to try and utilize the resources we have to our best. It’s only then we are going to get what we need, come the tough situations,” Raman told TOI.
Washington Sundar will be next seen in action during the Asian Games 2023, which are set to be played in China. The Ruturaj Gaikwad-led team will play their first game in Hangzhou on October 3.
All Countries Have A Lot Of Talent – WV Raman
WV Raman acknowledged that the Indian men’s team are the favorites to win the gold medal in the 2023 Asian Games. However, he emphasized that teams like Bangladesh and Afghanistan could cause upsets in the tournament.
“We saw quality cricketers playing in that Emerging Asia Cup as well, even though the other countries resorted to sending a few cricketers who already played for their senior side in that tournament. Bangladesh, Afghanistan, all these countries have a lot of talent in their ranks. So if our guys, I mean the Indian side, becomes a little bit complacent, they’ll pay a huge price.”
