Young opening batter Yashasvi Jaiswal has made history by becoming the fastest Indian opener to reach a half-century in Test cricket. Jaiswal broke the legendary Virender Sehwag's record on Day 4 of the second Test against Bangladesh at Green Park Stadium in Kanpur on Monday, September 30.
The Indian team bowled out the Bangladesh team for 233 runs in the first innings of the ongoing second Test match. Mominul Haque shone with the bat, scoring 107 runs off 194 balls with the help of 17 boundaries and one six. None of the other Bangladesh batters crossed the half-century mark.
For Team India, Jasprit Bumrah picked up three wickets, including Mushfiqur Rahim and Mehidy Hasan Miraz, for 50 runs in his 18 overs. Akash Deep, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Mohammed Siraj took two wickets each. Left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja removed Khaled Ahmed to bowl out Bangladesh.
Team India Completed Fifty Runs In Just Three Overs
Yashasvi Jaiswal set the tone for India with his aggressive batting approach alongside skipper Rohit Sharma. The left-handed batter and Rohit Sharma added runs at a run rate of over 14. The duo helped the Indian team complete the fifty-run mark off just three overs in the first innings of the Test match.
India set a new record for the fastest team fifty in Test cricket. The Men in Blue broke the previous record set by England, which reached 50 runs in 4.2 overs against the West Indies in July this year. Rohit Sharma scored an aggressive 23 runs off 11 balls before being bowled by Mehidy Hasan Miraz.
Yashasvi Jaiswal Breaks Virender Sehwag's Test Record
Yashasvi Jaiswal continued his impressive performance even after Rohit Sharma was dismissed. Jaiswal reached his half-century in just 31 balls. He became the fastest Indian opener to reach fifty in Test cricket and the third fastest. Overall, he was the joint third-fastest half-centurion for the Indian team.
Jaiswal was on track to become India's fastest Test centurion. However, his innings ended unexpectedly when Hasan Mahmud bowled him out. The delivery unexpectedly stayed low, catching Jaiswal off guard. Jaiswal was left disappointed after scoring 72 runs off 51 balls, including 12 fours and 2 sixes.
Yashasvi Jaiswal Breaks Ajinkya Rahane’s WTC Record
The 22-year-old left-handed batter who debuted in July 2023 against the West Indies has scored 1,166 runs in 19 innings over 11 matches in the ongoing 2023-25 World Test Championship (WTC) cycle. He broke Ajinkya Rahane’s record for most runs for the Indian cricket team in a single WTC edition.
