The former Indian head coach Ravi Shastri has showered rich praise on Shubman Gill. Having closely watched Shubman Gill’s growth from his early days, Ravi Shastri called the current Test captain the next big name to watch out for in world cricket.
Gill made his debut in all three formats when Shastri was the head coach of the Indian cricket team. The 25-year-old batter has already shown remarkable maturity in his batting and leadership. His recent performances on the England tour proved that he has the talent and temperament to carry India’s batting line-up for years to come.
Ravi Shastri hails Shubman Gill as India’s next superstar
Notably, the right-handed batter scored over 750 runs in the five tests against England after smashing over 650 runs in the IPL 2025. After India leveled the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025 in England, Shastri lauded Gill for his elegance, consistency, and effortless stroke play.
The former Indian head coach has pointed out that Gill’s calmness at the crease and his natural ability to adapt across conditions and formats make him different from others.
Whether it’s Test cricket, where patience is key, or the shorter formats that demand aggression, Gill has shown that he belongs at the highest level, and Shastri believes that he will only get stronger and more reliable.

He’ll get even better with time: Ravi Shastri on Gill
Ravi Shastri was quoted as saying by Sky Sports Cricket, “No question, Shubman Gill. He’ll be around for a long, long time because we’ve seen what kind of series he’s had here. I think he’s only 25 years of age, and as you know, with this exposure, he’ll get even better.”
Shastri added, “He’s right up there. He’ll be up there. He’s composed. He’s very regal. The way he bats, he’s very easy on the eye, very fluent, and has the ability to play the long innings.”
With Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma retiring from Test cricket, a massive gap was left in India’s batting and leadership. Shubman Gill, still young in his career, was asked to guide the new era. But he stunned one and all by showing maturity and confidence on the tough England tour.
Shubman Gill set for Asia Cup 2025 return after Test captaincy breakthrough
The next big challenge for India will be the Asia Cup 2025 in the UAE, which will be played in the T20 format. This tournament will help the teams to prepare for the T20 World Cup 2026 in India and Sri Lanka. Gill, after his solid run in England, is strongly in contention for a return to the T20I side.
But the competition is intense. With Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, and captain Suryakumar Yadav performing well at the top, India will need to carefully manage their batting order if Gill is included in the squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025.
It is also being said that Gill will return to India’s T20I setup as the vice-captain, with Suryakumar’s availability still uncertain due to his recovery at the NCA.
