Indian openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul scripted history during their record partnership for the first wicket during the first Test between Australia and India at Optus Stadium, Perth.
Both the batters put together a partnership of 201 runs before KL Rahul was dismissed for a well-made 77 off 176 balls. It was a great partnership between these two batters who were also opening together for the first time in a Test match.
The partnership was world-class and was full of resilience from the two top-class batters. Both of them matched caution with aggression and weathered whatever was thrown at them by a testing Australian bowling attack.
Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul break records during marathon partnership
With this partnership, Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul became the first opening pair from India to record a 200-run partnership on Australian soil. They now hold the record for the highest opening partnership by an Indian pair in Australia.
The previous record was held by the legendary duo of Sunil Gavaskar and Kris Srikkanth. Gavaskar and Srikkanth recorded a partnership of 191 runs for the first wicket at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) in 1986 against Australia, led by Allan Border at that time.
Overall, the partnership is India's second-highest opening partnership across formats against Australia. The record is still held by Shikhar Dhawan and Murali Vijay, who put together 289 runs for the first wicket at Mohali.
India's third-highest opening partnership in SENA
This partnership is India's third-highest opening stand in SENA countries (South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia). The record is held by Sunil Gavaskar and Chetan Chauhan, who formed a partnership 213 runs for the first wicket against England in 1079 at the Oval.
The pair of Vijay Merchant and Mushtaq Ali is second on this list with a brilliant 203-run partnership against England in 1936 at Manchester. Jaiswal and Rahul were just 12 runs away from breaking this world record.
The partnership between Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul is also the highest opening partnership by any non-England visiting team ever. The English pair of Wilfred Rhodes and Jack Hobbs still hold the record for the highest opening stand with a 323-run partnership at the MCG in 1912.
Yashasvi Jaiswal smashes his fourth Test hundred
While Rahul was the first wicket to fall in India's second innings for 77, Jaiswal went on to smash his fourth Test hundred and his first hundred in his maiden Test in Australia. The left-hander batted brilliantly to deny Australian bowlers any chance of a comeback.
He was finally dismissed for 161 through a soft dismissal off the bowling of Mitchell Marsh. Jaiswal played 297 deliveries during his marathon knock full of patience and perseverance. He struck 15 fours and 3 sixes during his knock.
It was Yashasvi Jaiswal's first Test hundred on Australian soil and he reached the milestone with a ramped six off Josh Hazlewood over the wicketkeeper's head. His knock put India in a commanding position from where they had a chance of batting the home team out of the match.
