The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has reportedly finalized travel plans for the Asia Cup 2025, which is set to begin on September 9 in the UAE. Five standby players, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Prasidh Krishna, Washington Sundar, Riyan Parag, and Dhruv Jurel, will not travel to Dubai with the main team.
Ahead of the Asia Cup, some of India’s squad members are featuring in the ongoing Duleep Trophy 2025. Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana are representing North Zone against East Zone in the quarterfinals that started on Thursday, while Kuldeep Yadav is playing for Central Zone against North East Zone.
Standby Players Not to Travel With the Main Squad to Dubai
According to a report by PTI, Indian players will travel to Dubai for the Asia Cup 2025 from their respective locations, rather than assembling in Mumbai as done in previous tours. The decision was made to ease logistics and ensure player convenience.
A senior BCCI official also confirmed that none of the standby players will accompany the main squad as reserves or net bowlers.
“No, the standby players will not be travelling with the main squad to Dubai,” the official told PTI.
Notably, the selectors have named only 15 players in the squad, even though the tournament rules allow a 17-member squad.
Team India to Arrive in Dubai on September 4 Ahead of Asia Cup 2025
The team, led by Suryakumar Yadav, is scheduled to arrive in Dubai on the evening of September 4 ahead of the tournament opener on September 9.
The report added that the first net session is set to take place on September 5 at the ICC Academy in Dubai. Players will avoid unnecessary domestic travel while ensuring they reach Dubai comfortably ahead of the tournament.
“All the players will arrive in Dubai by September 4 evening and the first nets session will be held on September 5 at the ICC Academy,” the official said on condition of anonymity. “Factoring in the logistical convenience, the players will be allowed to fly in to Dubai from their respective cities.”
“Obviously, a few will travel from Mumbai but to ask some of the others to first come to Mumbai and then fly to Dubai doesn’t make sense. In any case, Dubai is a short-duration flight compared to other international flights,” the official added.
India to Begin Asia Cup 2025 Campaign Against the UAE on September 10
India will begin their Asia Cup 2025 campaign against the UAE on September 10. They play their group-stage matches against Pakistan and Oman on September 14 and September 19, respectively. If India and Pakistan reach the final, they could face each other up to three times during the event.
Shubman Gill, Abhishek Sharma, and Sanju Samson are the primary openers, with Yashasvi Jaiswal included only in case of injury. Prasidh Krishna may feature as a backup for Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, or Harshit Rana.
Washington Sundar will also not accompany the main squad. The 2025 Asia Cup will be played in the T20 format. India secured victory in the Asia Cup 2023, which was played in the 50-over format in Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
