Former India cricketer Yograj Singh has a knack of making bold and controversial statements. He is in the spotlight once again for another bold comment.
Yograj Singh, who is also the father of India legend Yuvraj Singh, has claimed that the BCCI selection committee destroyed the careers of seven cricketers after the 2011 ODI World Cup win. He also stated that the selection committee wanted to get rid of the then-captain MS Dhoni as well.
2011 WC was the last for a number of stalwarts
Under Dhoni's captaincy, India won the 2011 World Cup on home soil. It was a historic win as India became the first-ever team to win the World Cup at home. The victory also ended India's 28-year wait for the World Cup. The tournament, however, also marked the end of a very successful era in Indian cricket.
The competition turned out to be the last World Cup for a number of stalwarts. The likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Zaheer Khan, Harbhajan Singh, and several other India greats soon retired or lost their spots in the Indian team. Only Dhoni, Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina, and R Ashwin went on to play in the next edition of the World Cup in 2015.
Yograj Singh slams former selection committee:
In a recent interview with InsideSport, Yograj Singh slammed the former selection committee for discarding players after the 2011 World Cup. He also accused the selectors of destroying the careers of a number of players.
"You (BCCI selectors) just destroyed these boys for no reason. Boys like Gautam Gambhir, Yuvraj Singh, Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan, Mohammed Kaif, VVS Laxman, Rahul Dravid. You just made them go after 2011. You just destroyed the team after the 2011 World Cup. The careers of 7 players were put into the gutter. That is why were are struggling," Yograj said.
We lost 5 series when MS Dhoni was the captain - Yograj Singh
Yograj Singh also spoke about Dhoni and said that former selector Mohinder Amarnath wanted to sack him as well. The selection committee wanted to remove Dhoni as the captain after India suffered whitewashes in the Test series in England and Australia.
"We lost 5 series when MS Dhoni was the captain and he was told he would be replaced by Mohinder Amarnath, but that's not the way to do it," Yograj said.
However, the selectors could not remove Dhoni as the latter had the backing of the then BCCI president N. Srinivasan. Dhoni went on to lead for a few more years before being replaced by Virat Kohli as the captain in all three formats.
