Former Indian cricketer Yograj Singh has turned heads with his bold statement about Shubman Gill’s recent appointment as India’s Test captain. While the nation celebrated Shubman Gill’s rise to leadership, Yograj stunned one and all by giving the entire credit to his son, Yuvraj Singh, for the youngster’s meteoric rise both as a player and leader in Indian cricket.
As Gill gears up to lead India in the upcoming five-match Test series against England, Yograj has highlighted the key people behind his success. He believes that Shubman’s father and legendary Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh played a huge role in shaping the youngster’s career.

Rather than highlighting Gill’s own hard work or recent form, Yograj has pointed out that it wasn’t just talent that helped India’s newly-appointed Test captain to reach this height, but it was also the right support and guidance from his father and son Yuvraj Singh at the right time.

Yograj Singh was quoted as saying by ANI, “The credit for Shubman Gill's performance goes to his father and Yuvraj Singh.”
The former Indian bowler said that it was Yuvraj’s sharp cricketing brain and behind-the-scenes guidance that shaped Gill into the player and now captain he is today. Yograj also noted that the former World Cup winner’s mentorship will be key to Gill’s longevity as a Test captain.

Yograj further added, “If Shubman Gill has become the captain today and will stay for a long time, Yuvraj Singh's guidance will play and has played an essential role in that.”
Notably, Yuvraj has worked closely with Gill over the years, and his influence is time and again highlighted by his father in the rise of the Indian batter. He signed off by saying, “Someone like Yuvraj Singh, the greatest cricketing brain in the world, taking Gill under his wing is a big thing.”
Meanwhile, Shubman Gill has become one of the youngest Test captains in Indian cricket history. However, many have questioned Gill’s lack of red-ball captaincy experience, but his rapid rise through the ranks tells a story of hunger, grit, and big-match temperament.

Shubman Gill set to begin a new chapter in England
In 2024, the Punjab lad cricketer led India in a five-match T20I series in Zimbabwe. In the IPL, he has been captaining Gujarat Titans from the front handling intense situations and guiding youngsters with maturity beyond his years. Under his captaincy, GT has already qualified for the IPL 2025 playoffs.
Earlier this year, Gill was Rohit Sharma’s deputy during India’s triumphant ICC Champions Trophy 2025 win in the UAE. He has so far represented India in 32 Test matches and scored around 1,900 runs, including five centuries. Now, he's ready to write a new chapter as a captain with the five-match Test series against England set to begin on June 20 at Headingley.
Notably, apart from Gill, Indian wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant was also elevated to the leadership. Pant was named India’s new vice-captain for the longest format of the game.
