Former India cricketer Yograj Singh, father of Yuvraj Singh, has shared a story about a sledging incident involving his son and former Australia captain Steve Waugh. Yograj said that Yuvraj Singh was hit by the ball and fell to the ground, and Waugh mocked him, saying, "This is not school cricket, you bloody kid."

Yuvraj Singh made his international debut at 19. Singh announced himself with a brilliant knock of 84 runs off just 80 balls in his first ODI appearance against Australia. The left-handed batter helped Team India secure a 20-run victory, marking the beginning of his illustrious international white-ball career.

Yuvraj Singh’s On-Field Spat With Australia Great Steve Waugh Recalled by Yograj Singh

Speaking to Inside Sports, Yograj Singh said that the words from Steve Waugh were harsh but taught Yuvraj how to give it back to the opposition. He described cricket as a “war fought by gentlemen” and noted that sledging, especially from the Australian side, often crosses the line.

"For me, it's a war fought by gentlemen. While you are in the field, there are times you are just going through the motions, and people should understand this. I don't know whether you have heard what Australians do on the field," Yograj told Inside Sports.

"They abuse everything which is in the world. They use every harsh word in the dictionary. I remember when Yuvraj was hit by a ball and he fell. Steve Waugh came and said, 'Get up, this is not school cricket, you bloody kid'," he added.

He Just Got Up and He Was Standing - Yograj Singh

Yograj Singh said that Yuvraj’s fiery exchange with Andrew Flintoff stemmed from the tough lessons he had learned earlier in his career. He added that Yuvraj became more aggressive and started giving it back to opponents in the same manner.

"And he just got up and he was standing. And then he would swear like this and what happened with Flintoff and Yuvi," Yograj added.

During the Super Six clash of the 2007 T20 World Cup, Andrew Flintoff exchanged heated words with Yuvraj Singh, which fired up the Indian batter. Yuvraj unleashed a brutal assault on Stuart Broad in the very next over, smashing him for six consecutive sixes.

You Are Still Friends When You Go Out - Yograj Singh

Yograj Singh said that emotional highs and lows are common when athletes play for their country. He said players remain friends off the field, despite on-field tensions.

"You are still friends when you go out. Everybody is not the same. Emotions go, forgive them. Obviously, at the end of the day, you are friends. You say sorry to each other and that is over. Have a big heart. Don't get into all these petty things. There is nonsense going on, fining kids and all this kind of stuff. It doesn't matter," he added.
