Former Team India cricketer and selector Sarandeep Singh recently made a strong statement on veteran all-rounder Yuvraj Singh's Test career. Speaking during a rapid-fire segment, Singh said that Yuvraj deserved a longer Test career for India, adding that he had the talent and ability to play 100 Test matches.
Yuvraj Singh retired from international cricket in 2019. The left-handed all-rounder featured in 304 ODIs for India, scoring 8,701 runs with 14 centuries and 52 fifties. Singh took 111 wickets, including a five-wicket haul in the 2011 ODI World Cup. He also played 58 T20Is, scoring 1,177 runs and taking 28 wickets.
Yuvraj Singh Should Have Played More Test Matches - Sarandeep Singh
Speaking on former Indian cricketer Taruwar Kohli's YouTube channel, Sarandeep Singh said that Yuvraj Singh should have played more Tests. Sarandeep stated that Yuvraj had the talent and ability to play 100 Test matches for India.
"I feel Yuvraj Singh should have played more Test matches. He should have played 100 Tests," he said during a rapid-fire segment.
Yuvraj played 139 first-class matches, scoring 8,956 runs at an average of 44.16, including 26 centuries and 36 fifties. He amassed 1,900 runs in 40 Test matches with three centuries and 11 fifties. The left-arm spinner also took nine wickets as a left-arm spinner.
Yuvraj Singh’s Test Career and Limited Opportunities in India’s Middle Order
Yuvraj Singh made his Test debut in 2003 against New Zealand under Rahul Dravid’s leadership. He struggled in Tests despite impressive outings in white-ball cricket.
Singh got limited opportunities in Test cricket partly due to India’s strong middle order, featuring Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, and VVS Laxman. He last played a Test match in 2012 against England during a home series loss to Alastair Cook’s side.
Ravindra Jadeja made his Test debut after Yuvraj was dropped. The veteran all-rounder performed well for Punjab in the Ranji Trophy in 2015 and 2016, but he was not recalled to the Test team. He was also overlooked for the 2015 World Cup.
Yuvraj Singh, Harbhajan Singh, Virender Sehwag Have Good Circles - Sarandeep Singh
Sarandeep Singh said that legendary Indian players like Yuvraj Singh, Harbhajan Singh, Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, and Ashish Nehra had a strong circle. He added that they stayed focused on their goals and avoided distractions, including excessive use of social media.
"Your circle has to be good. Yuvraj, Harbhajan, Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, and Ashish Neha have good circles. You will hardly see them on social media because they know how to follow their goal, and it comes when you have that kind of circle," he said. (23:14)
Sarandeep Singh represented India in five Tests and three ODIs between 2000 and 2003. He took 10 wickets in Tests and three wickets in one-day appearances.
He played 92 first-class matches and took 314 wickets at an average of 28.98, including 18 five-wicket hauls. With the bat, he scored 2,216 runs, including seven half-centuries. Beyond his playing career, Singh worked as a national team selector from 2016 to 2020.
