10 Deadly Injuries In Cricket; Though the game of cricket has always delivered stars and superstars, there are quite a few players, who left the game with injuries that would sustain throughout their life. A few cricketers even lost their lives as well. Meanwhile, we figured 10 such cricketers, who involved in the deadliest injuries during the course of the game.

The death of Philip Hughes will always remain in the mind of the fans, as it was such a shock, something, which never expected by anyone. However, there are quite a few other incidents as well, which shook the cricketing world during their times.

10. Nari Contractor:

One of those unfortunate cricketers, who never made a comeback after the injury. In 1962, India’s young captain Nari Contractor was left critically ill after being struck on the head by West Indies fast bowler Charlie Griffith. He made a remarkable recovery and while he did return to the game, he was never again picked for his country.

After being hit on the head, Contractor slumped to his hips, clutching his head. Within a minute he had started bleeding from his nose and ears. His life was saved by blood transfusion but the incident ended his international career.

Yet another Indian cricketer makes into the chart. Raman Lamba hails from Uttar Pradesh and played four Tests and 32 ODIs for India.

On February 20, 1998, Lamba was fielding for Abahani Krira  Chakra against Mohammedan Sporting in Bangladesh League game at the  Bangabandhu Stadium when he was asked from the outfield to go to short leg.  He died after slipping into a coma due to internal haemorrhage, three days after being hit by a cricket ball.

A freak accident ended South Africa wicketkeeper Mark Boucher’s career during the tour of England while playing a practice match against Somerset in July 2012.

Boucher was keeping to Imran Tahir when one of legspinner’s delivery flicked a bail into his left eye leaving it bloodied. Medical findings later revealed a lacerated sclera, forcing him to call of his cricket career days later.

7. Steve Waugh, Jason Gillespie Collison:

One of the bad incidents was when Jason Gillispie and Steve Waugh collided into each other with full speed. In this case, both the cricketers were injured severely. While attempting to catch the ball hit by Sri Lanka’s Mahela Jayawardene during the 1999 Galle Test match, both the players collided into each other.

During the incident, Steve Waugh broke his nose while Jason Gillespie injured his leg, which resulted in taking rest for quite a few days. It was a horrific incident to forget.

6. Abdul Aziz:

Abdul Aziz was a Pakistani player. He was playing in a club match. Dilawar Awan, a spinner, bowled at him which struck Aziz just over the heart. When he was preparing to face the next ball from Awan, Aziz fell down and died on the field. He was the first player to die on the cricket field.

Aziz was a promising young player who played as both opening batmans and wicketkeeper when he died in a domestic match in Karachi in 1959.

5. Mark Vermeulen:

Not once or twice, he was hit on the head for thrice during his career. The Zimbabwe batsman was struck on the head on three different occasions during his career, twice sustaining a fractured skull.

The consequences included depression, temporary insanity. Later, he made an arson attack on the national cricket academy. As a result, he had a spell in jail and then attempted suicide. Vermeulen suffered a depressed skull when he top-edged a bouncer from Irfan Pathan during a tri-series match in Brisbane.

4. Rille Rossouw:

In a match during 2012, part of Sri Lankan Premier League’s first season, Rilee Rossouw represented Basnahira Cricket Dundee and Lasith Malinga for Ruhuna Royals.

Malinga streams in to bow at Rilee and he released a bouncer at a good speed of 141 KMPH. That ball travelled to hit Rossouw’s helmet grill in front of his nose which produce a break in his nose muscle. Instantly, he started bleeding and was down with pain. Later he has received three stitches for it.

3. Mike Gatting:

Mike Gatting was playing against West Indies in 1986 when Malcolm Marshall bowled a bouncer at him. Gatting tried to pull the ball. The ball hit his nose, and there was blood all around. He was taken off the field and had to undergo plastic surgery.

It was one of the major headlines in the newspaper, which was covered for quite a few days. Later, he recovered well to pick the bat again.

2. Wasim Raja:

The former Test all-rounder and International Cricket Council match referee Wasim Raja suffered a heart attack during an over-50s game in Buckinghamshire, England.

Wasim Raja had played more than 50 Test matches and 54 one-day matches for Pakistan. His brother Rameez also played Test cricket for Pakistan.

He was a crowd favourite not only because of his hard-hitting abilities but because he was a charismatic character. He was an idol of most of the youngsters in the ’70s and ’80s.”

The youngster was hit by a bouncer on the back of the head during a Sheffield Shield match. Never regained consciousness, failed to recover following surgery and was declared dead three days later at a Sydney Hospital.

He received medical treatment on the boundary before being taken to hospital, where he died two days later. It was one of the sad incidents for Australia. All the cricketers were down with the pain of losing their fellow cricket.

The bowler Sean Abbott, who delivered the bounce to Phil Hughes neck was required multiple counselling classes to recover back from that incident.
