The whole world is now busy gearing up for the World Cup, the biggest sporting extravaganza in the game. The twelfth edition of the World Cup will start on May 30 with hosts England taking on South Africa in the tournament-opener. However, the tournament is not the same for many as a 16-year-old boy was beaten to death, allegedly by four students, while playing cricket at Chippedu in Chennai’s Kancheepuram district on Tuesday evening.

According to reports in Deccan Chronicle, the boy’s body was recovered from barren land in Erikarai area on Wednesday morning. The Police said that the victim, M. Naveen Kumar, son of Munuswamy of Chippedu was a Class 10 student at a government school in the same locality. Naveen and his friends had together gone out to play cricket near his house.

Sources said Naveenhad not returned home for several hours. Sensing danger, a worried Munuswamy lodged a complaint at the Sivakanchi Police. Police registered a missing case and launched a search for the missing boy. Inquires revealed that Naveen Kumar’s friends were also found missing. The body was eventually found on Wednesday morning at around 9 am. The body was covered in a pool of blood in Erikarai near Ellakulam.

The Sivakanchi police rushed to the spot and sent the body to the Kancheepuram government hospital for post-mortem. Police said the sustained severe injuries on his head and post-mortem reports revealed the deceased was beaten to death with a wooden log. The police registered a case of unnatural death and launched a search for his friends who are absconding.
