Cricket has always been a game which has been dominated by batsmen. While bowlers are equally important in the outcome of a match, the batsmen provide the X-factor to the game. Especially with the inception of T20 cricket around one and a half decade ago, players have become more fearless. It has become more of a batsman’s game than ever. The bowlers are hardly spared now and even the good deliveries are sometimes smashed for sixes.

The shortest format of the game has helped the speed of the other two formats. Batsmen nowadays are not afraid of going after the bowlers even in the longest format. Double centuries in ODI cricket was very rare in limited overs cricket until Sachin Tendulkar became the first to smash the maiden double century in ODI history way back in 2010. However, batsmen of the current generation have the ability to even score a triple century in ODI’s.

So now without wasting any time let us have a look at 5 possible players who might score a triple century in ODI’s

Rohit Sharma

The first name which comes to mind is none other than Rohit Sharma. The Indian opener in the limited overs format is simply sensational and his record speaks for itself. His career took a sharp turn when MS Dhoni elevated him as the opener of the team in the 2013 Champions Trophy. From there on, it has been a brilliant ride for Rohit. He has gained in confidence and has gone on to become one of the most prolific run scorers in ODI cricket.

He is the only cricket in world cricket to smash 3 ODI double centuries. A staggering statistic indeed. Not a single player has scored even two. Hence it goes on to prove that Rohit has the ability to play the long innings to perfection. His highest ODI score is a stunning 264 of 153 deliveries against Sri Lanka at the Eden Gardens. He has also smashed a double century against Australia while the 3rd one also came against the Lankans. Given his ability to accelerate in the later part of the innings Rohit should be a prominent name in this list.

Chris Gayle

The Universe Boss is another name in the list who has a genuine chance of scoring an ODI triple century. The record could be realized if Gayle manages to bat through the 50 overs. The southpaw is a sensational striker of the ball and is one of the most feared batsmen in world cricket. Despite his relatively mediocre returns in the recent past, Gayle is always a legend in the limited overs format.

However not many would know that Gayle has scored two Test triple centuries and is only one among the 4 players in history to achieve the feat. Gayle smashed his maiden ODI double century in the 2015 World Cup against Zimbabwe. Even in the recently concluded IPL, he scored a brilliant century against the Sunrisers Hyderabad. Given his ability to smash the ball on a consistent basis, Gayle has the ability to score an ODI triple century.

David Warner

The suspended Australian batsman is one of the finest batsmen of the modern generation. Warner won’t be able to play for the national team for a year due to his involvement in the ball-tampering scandal a few months ago. However, he is expected to return next year serving his one year ban. However, whether he gest selected in the team just after completing his suspension or not remains to be seen.

Warner has the ability to decimate star-studded bowling line-ups on his day. He has proved time and again that what he is capable of. The southpaw is a sensational striker of the ball and can make any bowling line-up look clueless in front his batting. If he stays at the crease for 50 overs, then there is a possibility that we might see a triple century from his blade in ODI’s before he calls it quits from international cricket.

Martin Guptill

The New Zealand opener is another sensational striker of the ball. During the 2015 World Cup, Guptill smashed the highest individual score in the tournament with a sublime 238 against West Indies in the quarter-final. It was power hitting at it’s ominous best, Guptill took the Windies bowlers to the cleaners and kept them depositing over the boundary ropes.

He has played quite a few stunning innings in the limited overs format. The right-hander boasts of an impressive record in the format. However, consistency is always an issue with Guptill. However, if he gets going it is pretty tough to stop him. Hence there are possibilities that Guptill might become the first man on the planet to smash an ODI triple century.
