England are among the four teams who have the potential of scoring 500 runs in an ODI innings

The cricketing fraternity was in a for a massive surprise on Tuesday, as England smashed the highest-ever total in One-Day Internationals against Australia.

The Eoin Morgan-led side dismantled Australia to storm their way to a record total.

It was carnage at Trent Bridge, as the hosts scored 481 for six. Whirlwind centuries from Jonny Bairstow and Alex Hales, plus a 21-ball half-century from Eoin Morgan helped England eclipse the 444 for three they made at the same venue against Pakistan two years ago. Overall, England thrashed 41 fours and 21 sixes.

Bairstow smashed 139 – his fourth ODI century in six games – while Hales hit 147. Bairstow’s knock came off 92 balls and contained 15 fours and five sixes.

On the other hand, Hales hit 16 fours and five sixes during his 147-run knock.

With England falling short by just 19 runs from the 500-run mark, here we take a look at teams who have a realistic chance of achieving that feat –

4. New Zealand:

While New Zealand have crossed the 400-run mark only once in addition to scoring 390-plus totals thrice, there is no doubt that they have a batting lineup which can score 500 runs in 50 overs.

Their opening pair of Martin Guptill and Colin Munro are some of the finest hitters in the game at the moment.

In the middle-order, they have the likes of Kane Williamson, Tom Latham, Colin de Grandhomme and Ross Taylor who can take any attack to the cleaners.

Well, not many will back the Black Caps to breach the 500-run mark, but they have it in them to achieve it.

3. South Africa:

When it comes to scoring big in the 50-over format, South Africa knows a thing or two about it.

The Proteas hold the record for the most number of 400-plus scores in ODIs. They have done it on six occasions with the last one coming against India in 2015.

Moreover, they had also incredibly chased down 434 in 2006, a time when the 400-plus score was a rarity in ODIs.

Although AB de Villiers has retired, they have enough batsmen who can propel the score to 500. The likes of  Hashim Amla, Faf du Plessis, Aiden Markram, David Miller, Quinton de Kock, David Miller, and Heinrich Klaasen have the potential to blow away any opposition.

2. India:

Team India have always boasted of a great batting lineup, and the current team is not an exception either.

In top three of their batting lineup, they have Rohit Sharma – the only man with three ODI double tons – and Virat Kohli, the man who has scored a staggering 35 ODI tons.

The middle-order is equally explosive with the likes of MS Dhoni, Hardik Pandya, Manish Pandey and it will be not at all surprising to see the Men in Blue cross the 500-run mark.

After South Africa, India has scored more 400-plus totals in ODIs. Not only that, but they also hold the record of scoring most 300-plus totals. In December last year, they became the first team in ODI history to make 300+ on 100 occasions.

England’s limited-overs fortunes have taken a huge turn for the better ever since Eoin Morgan was made the captain after the disastrous 2015 World Cup.

Currently the top-ranked ODI side in the world, England’s batting lineup is arguably the most feared in the world cricket at the moment.

Right from the openers to the lower middle-order, they boast of batsmen who can score runs very quickly. Jonny Bairstow and Jason Roy have formed a formidable partnership at the top. Following them will be the likes of Alex Hales, Eoin Morgan and Jos Buttler who can butcher any attack on their day.
