The Big Bash League (BBL) indeed derives its roots from the Indian Premier League (IPL). Over the last few years, the Australian T20 league has evolved to be the most sought cricketing league after the Indian Premier League. It is no secret that both of the cricketing behemoths have produced players who are on the verge of becoming world-class cricketers not only in the shortest format but also otherwise.

The IPL is undeniably the most followed T20 cricketing tournament in the world. The tendency to draw players from almost all other countries through unprecedented penetration is what separates it from the rest of the competitions. There have been athletes from the Australian T20 extravaganza who have fetched million-dollar contracts in the IPL in the past. With the IPL auction set to take place on December 19th, few players from BBL could bag big contracts.

We at Cricket Addictor will take a look at five players from the previous season of Big Bash League who can earn huge in the upcoming IPL 2020 auctions:

The tall, quick bowler from New South Wales played his first game for Australia back in 2014. Sean Abbott made a comeback to the national side after five years, earning himself the man of the match award for his lethal fast bowling spell of four overs (4-0-14-2).

Abbott played for Royal Challengers Bangalore way back in the year 2015, having purchased by the franchise for INR 1 crore in the auction. Sadly, the 27-year old failed to pick up even a single wicket from his two games, conceding 57 runs at an economy rate of over 11.

However, his performance in the Big Bash League paints a different picture. Abbott has finished his last three seasons of BBL amongst the highest-wicket takers. In the 2016-17 season, he took 20 wickets in ten matches which was the highest in the tournament. He ended the 2018-19 season as the second-highest wicket-taker with 22 scalps in 15 games at an average of 20.13.

With the Royal Challengers Bangalore hunting for adept pace bowlers, the franchise may hand a rejuvenated Abbott his second stint to solve their fast-bowling woes.

Cameron Boyce

The leg-spinner from South Australia last featured in a T20 fixture for Australia back in 2016. Cameron Boyce hasn’t been able to cement his spot in the national side despite promising performances in limited opportunities. However, the Indian Premier League could help in enhancing his recognition.

Boyce played an integral role in helping Melbourne Renegades lift their maiden title in the 2018-19 season. Despite the tracks down under not assisting spin much, the leg-spinner finished the season with 16 wickets in 16 games at a reasonable average of 24.25.

In the sub-continent decks that offer turn, Boyce can be highly effective. The 30-year old, also being a capable batsman down the order can press his claim to get included for the ICC T20 World Cup next year.

Matthew Wade

Matthew Wade earned a Test recall in Ashes 2019 on the back of his strong domestic performances in the first-class circuit for Tasmania. However, his performance in the white-ball cricket remained equally at par. Prior to the Ashes, the gloveman also shone for Australia A against Derbyshire, striking the fastest hundred (45 balls) by an Australian in List A cricket. Wade formed a brutal opening partnership with D’arcy Short in Hobart Hurricanes, single-handedly gunning down a target of 155 against Adelaide Strikers in the latest season of BBL.

The 2011 season of the Indian Premier League saw Wade feature in only three games for the Delhi-based franchise, scoring 22 runs at a mere average of 7.33. Having scored 592 runs in 15 matches in the 2018-19 season of BBL, the 31-year old can be used as a floater batsman in any line-up.

He can also be installed as an opening batsman to plunder the runs in the powerplay as well as a middle-order player to settle in and launch an onslaught in the death overs.

Ben Mcdermott

The 1980s saw Craig Mcdermott bouncing out batsmen with his textbook outswing bowling. The current generation is witnessing his son Ben Mcdermott rising to the ranks with the willow in his hand. Ben Mcdermott has been long billed to be Australia’s mainstay in the middle order, capable of whacking the ball outside the park with ease.

Playing for Hobart Hurricanes in the 2018-19 season of Big Bash League, the 24-year old accumulated 376 runs in 15 games at an average of 37.60. His strike rate of 123.27 spells that he can be one of the finishers to watch out for in the death overs. While he hasn’t had the desirable start in his international career, he could upgrade himself further to the rigours of international cricket by playing at a demanding stage of IPL.

Callum Ferguson

Callum Ferguson was a semi-regular fixture in Australia’s ODI set up until a knee injury in 2009 begun to end his career entirely. While he continued to churn out the runs in the Sheffield Shield after that, his name was still overlooked for a recall to Test cricket until he aged 32. A flamboyant striker of the ball, the 34-year old can also be the aggressor when needed.

He amassed 442 runs in 14 games for Sydney Thunder in the last Big Bash League season, including a hundred off 53 balls. His unbeaten century (113*) was the highest score that season which came against Perth Scorchers. While the South Australian cut a sorry figure, scoring 98 runs across two seasons (2011 and 2012) for Pune Warriors, a team like Kings XI Punjab can secure his services to have a middle-order batsman who can hold the innings together.
