The National Green Tribunal seeks a response from the Centre, BCCI and others after a plea seeking a ban on 2018 Indian Premier League on the ground of wastage of lakhs of litres of water during the tournament.
A bench headed by Justice Jawad Rahim issued a notice to the Ministry of Water Resources, the Board of Control for Cricket in India and the nine states where the IPL matches are proposed to be held.
All these bodies have been asked to reply within the next two weeks. A hearing about the case will take place on 28th April.
A youth named Haider Ali from Alwar filed a petition in the National Green Tribunal in Delhi.
Ali, a resident of Janata Colony in Alwar, said that a lot of water is being wasted in the IPL matches. To prepare a pitch before the game around 60 lakhs litre water is used around the country.
The plea said:
“Direct the authorities to stop holding the cash-rich tournament for commercial purpose which would be played at nine venues commencing April 7.”
The petition has been filed through advocates Braham Singh and Rohit Vidhud. The appeal also said:
“The 11th edition of IPL will be played at nine venues across 51 days and lakhs of litres of water is to be used for preparing pitches and in the stadium for playing 60 matches which would adversely affect the groundwater level, ecosystem and the ecology of the country.”
