That Gautam Gambhir and Aakash Chopra are not the best of friends was very much evident with their recent comments and their latest exchange during a conversation on Star Sports has made things pretty much clear.

In September, Gautam Gambhir had criticised MS Dhoni for demoting himself at number seven while Chennai Super Kings were chasing an improbable 217 against Rajasthan Royals. Later, Chopra had taken a sly dig at Gambhir by saying that the former India opener is ‘one who isn’t known to mince words on all matters Dhoni’.

Earlier this month, Chopra was at it again when Gautam Gambhir had opined that Rohit Sharma should be leading India at least in the T20Is. Responding to it, Chopra had asked his former state teammate whether Rohit would have been able to lead Royal Challengers Bangalore to IPL title while defending Kohli for his team’s failure.

On Monday, Aakash Chopra and Gautam Gambhir made it pretty much clear that they do not share a very good rapport with each other. Both the former India openers were speaking on Star Sports about who should lead India in the shortest format of the game.

Gautam Gambhir started the conversation by saying: “We are not saying Virat Kohli is a bad captain but Rohit Sharma is a better captain. In fact not better but there is a huge difference between their captaincies.”

In reply, Chopra disagreed with the former India opener and opined that there is no time to build a new team around a new captain ahead of next year’s T20 World Cup. Gambhir’s facial expression made it clear that he was not at all impressed with Chopra’s c0mments and hit back by saying that when players are selected for international cricket on the basis of IPL performances, then India’s captain can be picked by the same parameter.

Chopra, in response, said that performance for India should be prioritized over performance for IPL franchises while also stating that Kohli has done well as a T20 captain in international cricket.

With an unamused expression on his face, Gambhir quickly pointed out that the likes of T Natarajan, Washington Sundar, Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav were picked on the basis of their IPL performances as he backed his claim that Rohit should be made the T20 captain. Chopra tried to interfere but Gambhir went on to finish his point as the duo showed there is absolutely little camaraderie between them.

Here is the fiery exchange between the two former cricketers:
