After a mixed summer, Australia will kickstart their home season with the three-match T20I series againt Sri Lanka this month. The team from Down Under failed the defend their World Cup title after losing to eventual winners England in the semifinal. They, however, managed to retain the Ashes after drawing the five-match series 2-2.

It was the first time since 2001 that Australia left the English shores without losing the urn. Australia will now be looking to start their home season on a dominating note. However, they have suffered a big setback just days before the series against Sri Lanka with their limited-overs skipper Aaron Finch a doubt for the opening game.

Aaron Finch is in a race against time to be fit for the first game of the three-match series after picking up a side strain. The top-order batsman is sitting out Victoria’s ongoing Sheffield Shield clash against Western Australia in a bid to be ready for the series-opener on Sunday (October 27).

“It started out as a little back niggle and it’s just a little tear in my side. So hopefully not too long. It’s been a week since I did it,” Finch told Perth radio 6PR at the weekend.

He said he hoped to play a one-day game for his state on Wednesday but only if he feels good, stating:

“If I can still feel it and it’s a little niggle there, I think the medical staff will probably take the conservative route.”

If fit, Finch is expected to open the Australian innings with David Warner, before Steve Smith comes in at first drop. After Adelaide, Australia face tourists in Brisbane and Melbourne before Pakistan arrive for T20s in Sydney, Canberra and Perth. Sri Lanka are high on confidence after beating Pakistan 3-0 in their own backyard and Australia will have to be at their best to get the better of the islanders.
