Will he? Wouldn’t he? These have been the questions on everyone’s mind ever since South African head coach and their director of cricket, Mark Boucher and Graeme Smith, expressed their desire of having AB de Villiers back into the set-up for the T20 World Cup in Australia.
AB de Villiers was asked the same question by one of his fans during an Instagram Live session with former Zimbabwe cricketer-turned commentator Mpumelelo Mbangwa. The fan had asked AB whether he would be playing for South Africa again if he gets selected for the T20 World Cup in Australia, to which the former captain replied that ‘he would absolutely love to.
De Villiers once again reiterated that he has been in conversation with both Mark Boucher as well as Graeme Smith but admitted that the current uncertainty regarding the staging of the T20 World Cup has left him unsure and he can’t commit to coming out of retirement as of now.
“I would absolutely love to play [for the Proteas] but it’s so unsure at the moment, where we’re heading with cricket around the world,” said De Villiers as quoted by sport24.co.za.
“I’ve spoken to ‘Bouch’ and ‘Smithy’ and all of them and the urge is there. I would desperately want to represent my country again. [But] I can’t commit to that because I don’t know where I’m headed. Am I going to be fit if [the T20 World Cup] happens in 2021? Am I still going to be in form?,” he added.

AB de Villiers had announced a shock retirement in 2018
De Villiers added that even if he does commit to coming out of retirement he would like to make sure that he is at the height of his powers so that he scores a lot of runs for his country.
“If I do commit to something like that I’d like to think that I’m going to be in the best form of my life, so I can bat and score runs for my country. There’s a lot of factors that I can’t control at the moment, so I’m taking it one day at a time and, touch wood, everything will work out.” De Villiers added.
