AB de Villiers, former South African batsman, may have retired from the game back in 2018, but the speculations around his comeback to the fold refuse to die.

It all started when de Villiers former teammates Mark Boucher and Graeme Smitj took over the roles of Head Coach and Director of CSA respectively and expressed interest in having a discussion with the legendary batsman and possibly have him back into the set-up for the 2020 T20 World Cup.

But with the onset of coronavirus putting the T20 World Cup 2020 in jeopardy, may well offset those plans. AB de Villiers has now opened up on the uncertainty and have said that while he wants to make a comeback to the national team but given the uncertainty around he can’t commit to anything just yet.

“Yes, that is one of my big worries. The schedule over the next 12-24 months is very unclear. No one knows where this virus is heading and what’s going to happen with the cricket schedule around the world,” AB de Villiers said during the ‘Cricket Connected’ show on Star Sports.

He added: “That is one of the big reasons why I am not committing to any cricket at the moment. I have always been a person who tries to stay in now as much as possible, for now it is important for me to think there might be a possibility that I could play for SA again. For now, it is important to be as fit as possible. I am spending time on the treadmill at the gym making sure that I am fitter, stronger and healthier than the person next to me whoever is going to be my competition,”

De Villiers further added that when things return to normal, he wants to get on the field possibly rediscover the kind of form that he displayed during the later stage of his career before putting his name back in the fold.

“Once I get an opportunity to go outside my house is to start hitting the cricket ball and to get into that form that I was in 2015 and let’s say in the latter half of my career when I was playing good cricket. I want to get into that form of playing cricket as quickly as I can,”

With COVID-19 putting the T20 World Cup in jeopardy, chances are that it may get postponed till 2021.

“Yes things might change if the tournament [T20 World Cup] gets postponed to 2021, I don’t know. To be honest, it is something I don’t want to commit to at the moment because of past experiences… really getting hurt in the past. I sort of burnt myself in the past by committing to certain things I wasn’t 100% sure of… not communicating as well as I wanted to, to the right people at the right time,” De Villiers added.

Recently, the ICC confirmed that the preparations of the T20 World Cup will continue as planned but with the amount of risk involved with regards to safety of fans and everyone involved, no one really knows what the future of the tournament holds.
