The current situation due to the coronavirus pandemic might have taken the focus off cricket but AB de Villiers continues to be the talk of the town as speculations over his future in international cricket intensifies. Ever since Mark Boucher took over as South Africa’s coach in December, speculations have been rife that AB de Villiers would be recalled to the national side once again.

The former South Africa skipper sensationally announced his retirement from international cricket in 2018 summer. He, however, has kept playing in franchise cricket all across the world. Last year, he tried to represent South Africa in the World Cup but his proposal was turned down by the team-management.

However, Boucher has made it clear that he would not hesitate in picking AB de Villiers in the team for the T20 World Cup this year provided that the batsman makes himself available and satisfies other criteria. But while speculation is growing regarding his comeback to international cricket, AB de Villiers is keen to follow the ‘wait and watch’ policy rather than making a statement.

Speaking to IANS, de Villiers said that he is taking things slowly, he will assess the situation only after playing the Indian Premier League and check what is possible and what isn’t.

“Let’s wait and see what happens. My focus is on the Indian Premier League at the moment, and helping Royal Challengers Bangalore realise our full potential. Then we will sit down and have a look at the rest of the year and see what is possible,” he said.

Unfortunately, there are uncertainties over the IPL too due to the pandemic. As things stand, the tournament has been postponed till April 15 and a clear picture will emerge in the coming days.

De Villiers further explained what made him retire from international cricket. The South African great said that the desire to spend more times with his wife and sons made him bring down curtains on his illustrious career.

“Each player must consider his own circumstances and make his own decision. I reached a point where I wanted to see more of my wife and two young sons, and seek a reasonable balance between family and cricket. The mental and physical demands on the leading players are massive these days, but each player must decide what he can and can’t do,” he said.
