After spending the wicketless session in the opening session of the final of the Ranji Trophy 2019-20, Bengal finally managed to break the opening partnership of Saurashtra. While the opening batsman Harvik Desai lost his wicket to Shahbaz Ahmed, Abhishek Raman deserves the full credit for taking a superb catch at the silly point.

Saurashtra and Bengal have started the final of the ongoing Ranji Trophy season from Monday (9th March) at Rajkot. After winning the toss, the hosts Saurashtra decided to bat first.

The Saurashtra openers Harvik Desai and wicketkeeper-batsman Avi Barot started the innings with the solid partnership. At lunch on day one, Saurashtra posted 77 for no loss. While Desai was batting on 37 runs, Barot was not out on 39 runs at lunch.

However, on the 17th ball of the second session, that solid partnership was broken. The 25-year-old Bengal left-arm spinner Shahbaz, who has put the powerful impact on Bengal in this Ranji season, got the much-needed breakthrough at the early of the second session.

Abhishek Raman brilliantly reacted in the quick moment:

Setting a silly point, Shahbaz trapped Desai, and the right-handed batsman’s low defensive shot travelled to the silly point fielder Abhishek Raman (substitute). Raman excellently took that low catch after observing that ball keenly and provided the breakthrough for the Bengal side as Saurashtra were 82 for one.

Before that dismissal, Desai only managed to add one more run in that second session as he returned to the dressing room after scoring 38 runs. During his stay, Desai struck five fours.

On including this first final inning, Desai has scored 576 runs in 18 innings (11 matches) of this Ranji Trophy season (average 32.00). Apart from scoring one century, he has also registered two more 50-plus scores in this Ranji season.

On the other hand, it was the 31st wicket in this Ranji season for the Bengal spinner Shahbaz.
