The left-arm unorthodox bowler Abhishek Sharma, who is currently part of the Under-19 ICC Cricket World Cup 2018 for Prithvi Shaw-led India, is also a massive fan of Yuvraj Singh, but he has expressed that he wants to be the finisher like former Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni.
“Yuvraj Singh is one player I look forward to. Apart from him, I really admire MS Dhoni. I’m a big fan of his finishing skills,” Abhishek was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times.
The 17-year-old Amritsar-born Abhishek has so far featured in three India U-19 matches that saw him claiming three wickets after giving away 55 runs against Australia U-19 and then Zimbabwe. However, the slow bowler didn’t bowl against Papua New Guinea.
At the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui on January 14, Abhishek played a vital role which saw him scoring 23 and bagging a solitary wicket of Australia U-19 skipper Jason Sangha, as the India colts clinch their opener by 100 runs.
The teenager Abhishek, who has been working hard on his game, has knitted a dream of lifting the coveted youth title and is subsequently looking to give his best in New Zealand during the ongoing 12th edition of the U-19 World Cup.
“The dream is to win (the World Cup) and make it to the senior side. Hopefully, I’ll be able to achieve that,” Abhishek emphasized.
As the unit has already maintained that they won’t shown any complacency against any of the teams
India is listed in the Group B as the side under the guidance of Rahul Dravid has won their all three games so far against Australia, Zimbabwe and Papua New Guinea.
“Rahul sir helped me a lot. He always tells me to convert my starts into big knocks. Batting at No. 5, 6 is a different task altogether,” Abhishek said on Dravid’s efforts to keep the unit gelled.
Pertinently, the U-19 team suffered shocking defeats in the 2017 Asia Cup at the hands of Bangladesh and Nepal, however, the competition was won by Afghanistan after routing Pakistan.
“We committed a mistake (in Asia Cup) but this time we are fully ready. We’re concentrating on every team but it’s important to work on our strengths,” Abhishek reminisced.
The allrounder Abhishek is focusing on his game and India is scheduled to play the quarterfinal on January 26.
“We want to dominate. We have played some very good cricket so far,” Abhishek concluded.
Interestingly, in 2016, Abhishek was the leader of India U-19 when the side lifted the title of Asia Cup on Sri Lankan shores.
So far, Abhishek has featured in four first-class matches and respectively four List-A fixtures. He scored 202 runs across six innings in the longest format and 72 in the limited-overs fixtures, as he also collected nine wickets in the domestic formats.
