India will be looking to end the league stage on a high when they lock horns against Sri Lanka on Saturday. The Men in Blue have already sealed their place in the final four after thrashing Bangladesh by 28 runs in their previous encounter. But amidst all these, skipper Virat Kohli has left many sweating just ahead of the semifinals.

The India skipper is in danger of getting a ban from the ICC due to excessive appealing and arguing with the on-field umpires. Kohli was at his animated best against Bangladesh which has put him on the verge of getting a ban. Kohli had argued with the on-field umpires during the 12th over of the game when India lost a review.

Earlier in the match against Afghanistan too, Kohli had got into a debate with the on-field umpires. He was later fined 25 per cent of his match fee for excessive appealing. The right-handed batsman also accumulated a demerit point for breaching the ICC Code of Conduct, introduced in September 2016. Kohli had also received one during the Test match against South Africa on January 15, 2018.

The 28-year old breached Article 2.1 subsection of Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel. This offence is linked to “Excessive appealing during an International Match”. Level 1 breach holds a minimum penalty of an official rebuke, a maximum penalty of 50 per cent of a player’s match fee, and one or two demerit points.

But when a player ends up accumulating four or more demerit points within two years, the points are converted into suspension points and a player gets banned. Two suspension points get converted to a ban from one Test or two ODIs or two T20Is, whichever is first.

Kohli can now land in big trouble if he receives demerit point for his behaviour against Sri Lanka. India play against Sri Lanka on Saturday in their last league game. And if Kohli jeopardises things for him, it would not be a big surprise if he ends up getting the ban for the semifinal or the final if India make it.
